The question is:
My wife has been told by a work-mate that if you have a UK two pound coin
and the Queen is wearing a necklace that it's worth more than it's value
and could be a collectors item. Her work-mate said she had heard this on
the Radio and wondered if it was true or just a silly hoax.
can any of you coin experts enlighten us and clarify if it's true or not?

Thanks in advance for any info pertaining to this question.
Jim.
Mark it up to a hoax or at least a mis-informed person. The original
two pound coin was dated 1997 and had the old portrait of the queen. I
believe this bust had a necklace. Now they had some problems with the
two pound coin and the release was delayed about 8 months. In the
meantime the 1998 coins were produced with the new portrait that does
not have a necklace. Now when the coin was issued at first they only
released the 1998 coins. It was a few more months before they released
the 97's with the older bust. Since people had become used to the new
bust when the old bust suddenly showed up people jumped to the
conclution that it was a mistake and that they would be valuable.
Sorry, not true.

I got a sealed packet of 1997 coins on the first day of issue of two
pound coins (all but one heavily marked).

Not from my experience. It may be that there was some regional skew
in distribution so that some banks in some areas ended up with many
more of one year than the other.
I feel they still aren't circulating properly yet.

Well, so far I have received the £2.00 coin in my change on only two
occasions. Not exactly circulating very well in Scotland.
Ian
They're circulating better round here (Cheshire) - I must have had them
in my change about 20 times. Mind you, I've put a couple of hundred into
circulation myself over the last year...
