I have to say it was sometimes difficult, numbers 1 and 2 are almost equal
in my opinion. The same for the group 3, 4, 5 and 6. No big difference
between 7 and 8 and neither between 10 and 11.
Please give your reactions.

I think I should add that I do not have the Vatican euros yet. I based my
opinion purely on pictures I've seen on the Internet.

Belgium finished almost always last, just like in this list.
Be glad that it's Albert II (our King) that is on the coin, it will be worse
if it would be the future king Filip or even better our prime Minister
Verhofstadt !!!

It's not because it's the image of King Albert that I've placed the Belgian
euros low on my list. It's mostly because of the fact that just this one,
rather conservative, design is on all 8 coins. For that same reason Ireland
is low on my list too.
The Netherlands and Luxemburg are a bit higher on the list because at least
they both have 2 different, more modern looking, designs.

Oh, indeed. A few years ago I was in the camping shop of Gent talking
with the shopkeeper. As I do collect coins I asked whether he had any
coins with Albert on it. His response was "die lelijkerd, wil je ook
Paola?". (Translation: "that ugly person, do you also want Paola (his
wife)?") But he was able to complete my set of Albert coins...
As for Filip, it would perhaps be better to skip a king, like in the UK ;-).
Verhofstadt I do not see so often, but it is indeed not someone whom I
would like to see on a coin.

Yup.

Agree too, it makes me wonder how they came to putting a modern tanker
on one of the coins, looks more like a communist state coin. (See
some of the Eastern European coins from the sixties and seventies to
know what I mean, and also the banknotes. Many show just harvesting...)
In this case the occurence of the denomination on the national side is
not distractive from the design, contrary to Austria, see below.
> 3) Portugal ( all these logos make them NICE, imho! )
Pretty nice old designs put on a modern coin.
> ?4) Germany (1 and 2 Euros Rulez, all the rest sucks i think)
The Adler is done well indeed, the 1 to 5 cent is just like what they
had since 1950, the remainder, oh, well. Important for them perhaps.
> ?5) France ( Nice coins ! )
Not in my opinition, to much a design based on what they had already.
Marianne, the sowster and Marianne.
> ?6) Austria ( 1 and 2 Euro, SUCK, they aren't designed well, the rest looks

In my opinion they do suck all. I really wonder at the prominent
position the denomination of the coin is also put in on this side.
It detracts horribly from the design.
> 7) Netherlands ( Better 1,2,5,10,20,50 cents in confront to Luxembourg,
> but 1 and 2 Euros not nice like them )
The 1 and 2 Euro are just a repeat of a design from the coins minted from
1980. The smaller are worse in my opinion. There have been some
excellent paintings of the Queen that would do well on coins (from concrete
to pretty abstract, but she does like abstract art). A more cubist like
design would be much better. (And, yes, there are cubist paintings of her
that she likes pretty much.) But there are the rules that she should look
to the left.
> 8) Luxembourg ( Luxembourg look, IS BETTER than Nederlands, at least i like

In my opinion it is just plagiarism on the Dutch coins.

You are talking about something by Gaudy... Still the only major state
that does not put its ruler on all coins.
> 10) Ireland ( i like that Harp ! but too much repeated... )
A design used since 1924, when they became independent. A bit boring
indeed.
> 11) Finland ( not much impressed )
The lions are also of old age. The 1 and 2 Euro have new, better designs.
> 12) Belgium, Old Fat Head, repeated 8 times, B O R I N G
Ehrm, yes.

I think that most of these are well done. I would put them in top 3.
I have not yet had in hands the Monaco and Vatican sets, but I have
seen pictures. The latter I would put on par with Belgium (but you
should not expect anything else). The four designs for the former
appear to be nice, but just not the top. The strangest is that they
have a coin which both shows the current ruler and the heir presumptive.
Is there any other coin in the world where that did happen before?
Consider a circulation coin showing both Queen Elizabeth and Prince
Charles for fun.
Why not switch over to Euros and design nice Norwegian national sides for
the coins. We could well use some more nice designs ... so not just put King
Harald on all coins!!!
Arthur
There is a little problem. Norway is not a member of the EU.

Agreed. What I find a bit peculiar, though, is that this way the country
name appears twice on the back of each Portuguese coin ...

Dunno, I was not asked <g>. That Brandenburg Gate on the 10/20/50 ct
coins used to be on some GDR (East Germany, -1990) pieces. Guess the
reason why some see that Prussian building as a national symbol nowadays
is that it was so close to the border that divided East and West Berlin.
Doesn't have to do much with the country as a whole IMO but, oh well.

Make the second Marianne a tree/hexagon combination -- and these two
coins I actually like. "Based on what they had" is, by itself, not
necessarily bad ;-)

The coins with the Vienna monuments (10/20/50 ct) look nice. Have no
idea why the value appears on the back side as well. In the case of
Greece the reason (different alphabets) is obvious, but here?

Is that a "head-of-state specific" rule? On the Juliana coins, the queen
looks to the right. And yes, I like the portrait on the 1 and 2 euro
coins better, but the little dots on the cent pieces, between her head
and the twelve stars, are nice ...

Errm, that church you see on the Spanish 1/2/5 ct coins is the cathedral
of Santiago de Compostela, mostly Romanesque and baroque. Gaudí started
building the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona "only" about 100 years
ago ...
I don't understand anyway why the monarchies did not combine a small
portrait and another element. Many postal stamps are designed like that;
or think of the Dutch "millennium" coin with the queen's head on the
top. Might be difficult with the tiny cent coins, but other than that,
it should be doable :-)

They alternate. Willem-Alexander will also look to the right.

It swaps left<->right with each new monarch.

Ah, makes sense. I actually have some Wilhelmina coins, and she looks to
the left, too. Thanks to Dik as well.
