This story originated with the SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center). I
have supported their work via donations ever since I used their
reports on right wing terrorism for a class in regional and national
security when I was completing a bachelor's. That said though, the
SPLC has a very mainstream left wing view of the world, which,
interestingly enough, I found to be shared in some respects by some
Ron Paul libertarians. In particular, the SPLC accepts the unstated
premise that only the government should be allowed to create money.

The theatrical stunts of the militias are interesting, but only to
people who understand a complex array of issues. For most people,
Carl Sagan and Stephan Hawking are easier to comprehend than the
Federal Reserve system.

When you look at the broad, if spotty, success of community
currencies, you have to accept the fact that the SPLC is not on the
cutting edge of applied economics from a left populist perspective.
My tree-hugging comrades on the Traverse City Bay Bucks Initiative
(http://www.baybucks.org) had a clearer conceptualization of money
than that evidenced by the SPLC.

It might make an interesting ANA Educational Exhibit, "Moneys of the
Modern Militias."
