He posted as Juan de fuca, prowsolo, the general, rockstar, lostarrow
and other alias.
And he was the original internet troll on the subject of climbing,
dating far back into the usenet board Rec.climbing, before the web had
such communications.
For a long time, Jeff's posts were merely trolls, sometime appreciated,
sometimes resented. But as time went on, Jeff moved over to Supertopo .
Jeff opening up and shared more and more of himself with the online
community. His scientific interests, his struggles with physical pain
and depression, and his explorations into spirituality. He was our taco
seismograph.
I choose to believe that Jeff is relieved from his struggles now, after
facing them and exploring many ways of inner peace. I offer condolences
for those who knew and will miss him. We will.
I hate to post this in the post-apocolyptic Rec.climbing, but Feel like
Jeff would have liked that.
Fly high Jeff, on your greatest adventure since soloing the Prow.
Peace
Karl

I met Jeff through r.c before I even moved out here. I got really sick
on the drive out in the U-Haul, emergency room sick, and Jeff came over
an unloaded all my belongings for me so I wouldn't have to pay a late
fee on the truck. I still owed him dinner for that. He and his wife
took me to Griffith Park to see a Jim Bridwell slideshow, took me out
for dinner. He took me to Stoney Point for the first time. I often saw
him around campus, and we talked about his inventions. We gave each
other shit on r.c. He gave me the appelation "sport climbing
playboy", which was odd, because I was a broke postdoc driving a Honda
Civic with 200k miles on it, and I did far more trad then than I do now.
He and I even carried haul bags up to the base of the Nose and did the
first few pitches. From Camp 4. In the rain. Because the roads were
closed. During the great flood of 97. It rained for the next 40 days
and 40 nights and we would have certainly died. But he talked me into
it, before I was able to talk him out of it.
He made me laugh.
I hadn't seen him much recently, but I always figured I'd catch up with
him and buy him that dinner.
My condolences to his wife and family.

If there is a tunnel with a light at the end, I hope for Jeff that the
view when exiting was like leaving the Wawona Tunnel and that the Ride
of the Valyries was in his ears.
Thanks again for all the laughs.
I recall the wasted countless hours stuck in a cube or rained out on
the weekend, scanning rec.climbing for the latest hook set by Jeff or
to get the update on the lord slime/batten thread of the day/week/
month. The beauty and simplicity of the troll that was a Batten post
still brings a smile.
My condolences to all Jeff touched along the way.
Cheers,
Frank
I know I am late to this, but just wanted to add my condolences. It
is a sad day.

Same thing- I haven't been on here in well over a year, and showed up to
find about 1000 spam posts, and 10 memorial posts.
I never met him in person, but I always knew there would be something
outrageous to read here... and it was usually a response to him.
<Sigh>
