i've had a really stupid idea involving a summer holiday, climbing and
gibraltor
does anyone have any details on the climbing in gib. i only know that its
got rock their and has loads of monkeys.
i like the idea of the rock and dislike the idea of the monkeys. Could
someone tell me about these two things.
Also i'm trying to work out how to get there and where to stay. I guess
there might be a shortage of cheap campsites and backcountry to bivvy in.
any ideas

I spent about 4 days in Gibraltar about 11 years ago and I remember that
there was a good amount of rock there but much of it was off limits.  We
climbed up the  Southside of the island and chilled out on the summit (great
view/but windy).  There was also a huge old abandoned gun turret with a
entrance into the mountain that we goofed off in for a little while before
heading back to town to drink and look for sex.   If  I was you I would go
to Palma, which is a the Med. den of inequity and home of some good
climbing.

Well that doesn't sound very fair.

I forgot about the monkeys, they are pretty cool, but they keep them in
their own little sanctuary (i.e. Monkey Cage/house). So if you can't make
out in town the Monkeys on the hill are no longer an alternative.

I went last summer. loadsa monkeys that are free to roam about but you can't
really climb up the rock. we tried to walk up the rock but the guards at the
bottom wouldn't let us into the sanctury without permission. We had to get
in by going through a hole in the fence behind the hotel just down the hill
from the gates. The police / sanctury people seemed kinda mean but I am sure
you can find a way of getting in to climb it.

I'm not sure how the sanctuary is set up on gib. Is the main rock massive
fenced off and off limits or is there seacliff there as well?

As far as I have heard climbing on the rock is very much prohibited. Not
only is the rock itself riddled with army bases but it also surround by town
and loose rock falling into main shopping streets and not looked on
favourably.

Your better bet would be to head inland into Spain. I know of El Chorro as a
climbing area (never been tho'). Check out the rockfax guide. Find a review
of the guide on my Costa Blanca Climbing website at
www.geocities.com/costablancaclimbing .
