Actually it's on topic for the group, but off topic for the general matter
of this group anymore

Can anyone tell me where the best place in canada is to get marine insurance
for pleasure boating?

I have an 18ft four winns.

Thanks,

Mike

When I was shopping for boat insurance, I called the guy I buy my car & home
insurance from and let him take a shot at my business. Through him, I ended
up paying $128.00 per year for my 14' Lund & trailer (value: $3000.00).
Other quotes were in that same range, give or take $20.00. The policy I
ended up with covers all the frills (towing, etc).

Call your regular insurance agency as part of your search. It's in their
best interests to find you something good. Doing so takes you "out of the
market", meaning, if you speak to other agents, those agents will also ask
about your car/home coverage. There's a risk your current agent will lose
*all* your business. Obviously, they don't want that.

That may depend on where you are in Canada. In B.C., my insurance
broker is Barton Insurance Brokers Ltd. They deal with an underwriter
manager by the name of Beacon Underwriting Ltd who specialize in
marine craft. They in turn, represent major underwriters such as
Canadian Northern Shield Ins. Co., CGU Insurance Co., and Lloyd's.
That's the nature of the insurance industry; many parties involved.

My boat's roughly the same size as yours. It's important that you find
an agent and underwriter who are very familiar with pleasure craft and
not your regular household agents who just don't have a clue.

My hull = $30,000, Outboard (Honda) = $13,000, trailer $2,300,
personal effects = $1,000, Liability = $1,000,000, "Excess" liability
= $1,000,000. Annual cost = $544 Cdn. Just so you have an idea.

I go with Premier Marine Insurance Managers for my 18ft Hourston.
Costs about 6 bills for full replacement value. ie. they replace for
the insured amount, NOT current market value. Check the fine print.
You can get screwed if your policy is for current market value. If
you insure your boat for say 30K and it gets stolen, they look at the
market to see what a boat like yours would cost. If they find one
used for 12K, that's what they'll try to pay out.........even if
you're paying premiums on 30K.

I'm in the US but I second the post above. Get a quote from your
vehicle/homeowner insurer. Last time I compared prices my existing carrier
was within a few dollars of quotes from companies specializing in boats. I
have more confidence in a company that has been with me for 20 years and has
handled past claims to my satisfaction.

I agree with the agreed amount policies, not market value. Depreciation on
boats can be horrendous.

I checked Premiere Marine and they won't take anyone with no 'Marine
Insurance History'. So I got quotes from State Farm and Expert marine.
They were about the same cost, but Expert Marine included a $2 Mil liability
for watersports activities. They were both agreed value policies. Once I
secure the deal on the boat, I'll have to spend some time and do a good
comparison, but on the surface I think I would prefer to go with the Expert
Marine.

Good luck........hopefully you'll never need to find out how good your
policy is.
