A deep cycle battery will provide you with much better service than a
non-deep cycle battery. Since most marine batteries are rated for deep
cycle service, the answer to your question can be considered to be
"yes".
Now, the flip side is that my experience has been that many of the
"27" series (the larger automotive size) marine batteries do rather
poorly in a deep cycle application. I am sure that they fare better
than a straight automotive battery would have, but I have found that a
battery that was *intended* for deep cycle use does a lot better than
one intended for starting/deep cycle.
If you don't need a lot of amp-hours, then the 27 series marine
battery could be your best bet. I recommend getting a battery with
removable caps so that you can replace water when necessary. Don't rely
on "maintenence free" batteries being maintenence free, deep discharge
cycles tend to overwhelm their ability to reclaim their lost water.
If you are regularly discharging the battery past 50%, you would
probably do better getting a larger battery, and one made for extensive
deep cycle use. The most cost effective battery that I have found are
the 6 volt golf cart batteries. They are fairly tall, about 200
amp-hours each. It takes two in series to make a 12 volt system, or 4
to make a 24 volt system. The nice thing about them is that they can be
handled individually so you don't break your back getting them into the
boat. I can purchase them for about $55 a piece.

thats a bit misleading. Marine batteries come in starting, deep cycle,
and 'dual purpose'. I wouldnt assume deep cycle just because it
has a picture of a boat on it.
The dual purpose are interesing, for about $5 extra you get equal
or better cold crank rating in addition to the deep cycle rating
(comparing starting vs. dual purpose same brand). Looking at
the numbers it seems perfectly sensable to use the dual
purpose as a primary starting battery, but I feel I've missed something..

You can't do better than the Optima blue-top marine deep cycle battery for
something like this.
