Marine gps recommendations, please

GPS newbie, here.

I wish to purchase a gps unit for my boat. I will be fishing
in/around Green Bay, WI, Sturgeon Bay, WI, and Western Lake Michigan.
I would like to have an image of the lake (Lake Michigan) on the
screen with depth markings and contours and other marine markings. I
would like to be able to mark fishing hot spots for later retrieval
and return visits. The boat is an aluminum cuddy walkaround and has a
hardtop. If a handheld could satisfy the above needs, it would add the
benefit of taking it on infrequent trips to Canada when I go fly-in
fishing. Though, the main use would be as a fixed unit on the boat.

Please offer hardware recs and software recs if the base map of the
unit does not offer depth marking details.

Street mapping and aviation fun features will likely not be utilized.

Lowest total cost (hardware/software) is a prime consideration for
this, essentially, single application device.
