I have the option of paying about $1000 more for the Four Winns, but I
really like the performance of the Stingray, I haven't test driven either
boat yet, but before I did, I was wondering if anyone had any
suggestions/war stories/experiences with either/both boats to help me in my
decision

thanks

Both are good boats, Stingray may have edge in speed, Four Winns maybe in
overall quality....totally subjective per person. What power on both?

Both are powered by the small 3.0, but I can probably get a bigger engine in
the four winns, but they want a lot for that upgrade. Also available on the
four winns is the VDO instrument panel, do I really need this much
instrumentation?

thanks

Oh.....well, in a 19 or 20 ft. boat you are simply NOT going to be
satisfied with the 3.0 L motor. You need at least the 4.3 L V-6, if not a
small block V-8 to be remotely satisfied. Believe me, one of the first
laments one often hears is "....it's a nice boat, but I WISH it had more
power!" The Stingray with the 4.3 would be pretty respectable. As for
instrumentation, well, once again more is better, usually. You will see
that the marine industry is ridiculously overpriced. I want a new set of
headers for my big block Chevy in my Baja, but the $3000 price is insane.
The point of this is don't pay an extra $2K for $300 worth of gauges. A
tachometer is a must, as is a temp gauge and fuel gauge. Oil pressure and
ammeters next, perhaps the speedometer. Last would be things like trim
indicators and hour meters. Some in this NG have told horror stories of
Stingray's having blistered hulls and not getting good response from
Stingray for repair. A friend of mine has a Stingray and it is a good boat,
so I don't know more than that. I looked at several Four Winns before
buying the Baja, I think they make a high quality boat. Once again these
are my opinions only. Make the dealer...DEAL! This is the time of year
they are freaking out on their inventories! Good Luck!

You'll be happier with a larger engine. Either that or get the 17'er
with a 3.0l.

The Four Winns might have better interior finish but the exterior
finish I would call a draw. If you want preformance go with the Sting
but they are both good boats and I don't see how you can lose no matter
which you choose. Happy Shopping, jay

A number of years ago (about 93') a friend had a 19' four wins bow rider
with a 115 HP Evinrude out board and it was a very solid package. The
boat had a very solid feel when it hit waves and it handled well. I
don't know how it compares to an inboard, but the 115HP outboard was
acceptable. Far from a rocket, but enough to get you from a to b
and to go knee boarding with 3 or 4 people aboard.

I've never ridden in a stingray so I can't comment on those, but if four
wins still makes boats like they used to then I think you can't go
wrong. Best of luck!

Matt
