Hi, to group. No hurry here as I won't be buying till spring. I'm
looking for some websites in addition to some feedback on a Johnson
9.9 for a sail kicker. Can't seem to find a price.

TIA.

Last I heard they went out of business but that may have changed. However
for a sailboat kicker there is only one choice and that is the 9.9 T-9
Yamaha. The only thing that comes close is the Honda but it doesn't have
the reduction gearing and wastes an awful lot of fuel. Do some more
research and ask around sailing circles and then save a lot of money in the
long run and get the Yamaha. It is far superior in ALL respects. Which is
why I got one and use it on my 26' sloop.

Hi Erik,

In the Feb 2001 issue of Trailer Boats magazine, there is a great article '
Marine Power 2001' with prices and specs on all outboard motors.

The OMC / Evinrude 9.9hp HT 4 stroke is $2,756US.

OMC / Johnson only shows a standard model 9.9hp that is 2 stroke.

OMC went out of business this last year, but I think they are purchased and
coming back on line soon.

I too personally would get a Yamaha 9.9hp HT 4 stroke @ $2,870US or maybe
less this winter??

Changed. Bought by Bombardier. The Johnson 9.9 4-stroke is a pre-1999 model but
is identical to Evinrude models. For 1999 Johnson/Evinrude decided that their
product lines should be distinct, so Johnson stopped selling 4-stroke and
fuel-injected 2-strokes and Evinrude stopped selling carbureted 2-strokes.

I don't know about the fuel consumption, but have to agree that the Yamaha High
Thrust 9.9 is best suited as a thruster as it does have the lowest reduction
gearing of all 9.9's at 2.92. The Evinrude 9.9 4-stroke comes in second with
2.42 gearing as standard, tied by Mercury/Mariner's 4-stroke Big Foot or
Sailpower version. Next comes Honda with 2.33. Honda's current 9.9 comes in an
8 hp version, but all other 4-stroke brands' 9.9 comes as a 15 hp version, so
Honda is smaller and lighter than others. Tohatsu/Nissan is heaviest and
Mercury/Mariner appears to be that same outboard with a different gearcase.

It's tough to keep up and stay informed. For 2002, Bombardier has
Johnson 4-strokes, up to 70hp, and the Evinrudes are strictly FICHT
technology.

I wish I'd have know that. I got mine on a deal for $2100 in Oregon instead
of $2600 plus sales tax in Washington. For $1900 there is NO discussion and
the search is over. Get the Yamaha.

Figure in shaft length too. Yamaha is 2nd with 25" and Honda has 28" but
the rest as I recall are way shorter and not good for sailboats. Also . . .
.get the 4-stroke rated mount from Fulton. Finally, Yamaha comes with a
neat six foot extension cable and you can mount the OB tiller handle up in
the cockpit or even on the sailboat tiller itself. Beats leaning over the
back to shift gears and they don't require the huge clunky shift boxes sold
by the others.
