I've got a 1987 19ft Bayliner that looks good except for the 8 inch wide navy
blue stripe around the boat. The previous owner let the boat bake in the sun
and it faded it really bad, especially on the stern. Is there any preparation
necessary, besides cleaning it really good, before spraying it with a good
marine paint? I know a guy that has a auto body/paint shop that will paint it
for me (I'll be providing the marine paint) but he's never painted a boat
before. Does the fiberglass need to be sanded then primered before painting,
like a car?

Asj your body shop buddy to try some orange compound on it first. Might fix the
problem, wont hurt if you have to paint. Follw the prep instructions from the
paint system you decide to use.

Clean like crazy, you have to remove all the old wax, polish, etc.
especially any silicone based products. Clean with ammonia several times.
Sand till you remove all the loose bits of fiberglass & all of the surface
has been scuffed for good paint adhesion. Clean again. Wipe down with
acetone or paint thinner & start priming.

Good time to fill in any dings etc. with epoxy....

Pretty much just like painting a car.

There are solutions available to remove the silicon at all automotive paint
stores.
