Ok, without a lot of research I can tell you this much.. So far, they
work pretty well.

The wife is, uh, was about a pack a day smoker, she rolls her own so
it's a lot cheaper than it could otherwise be, but she spends a lot of
time rolling every day. The other day she tried one of these e-cigs with
no expectations, and no pressure. Holy crap, she is down to about two
cigarettes a day (from 20) and in between pulls on the e-cig nicotine
system. There is no smell at all and no fire so she can do it in the
car, or in the barn, etc... So far she has a real cig in the morning,
uses the e-cig all day, and one real cig before going to bed...

Bottom line is, I am not sure if she is trying to quit cigs all together
or just cut back. But from talking to her, the e-cig completely
satisfies her desire to smoke any real cigs all day long. No cravings,
doesn't miss the real things during the day, etc.. If she continues this
way she will probably never smoke another cigarette again which will be
cool with me and The Mouse;).

I should note that I don't know a lot about these things, and am not
endorsing the use of any nicotine product or vap product. I am only
reporting our own personal experience with them. Do your own research,
these things are not yet regulated so buyer beware...

I went from 1 pack a day to quitting cold turkey about 9 years ago.
Chewed two pieces of nicorette gum, then stopped that. It was 6 weeks
of no fun, but now I can't stand cigarette smoke.

Hopefully she'll find a way to stop completely.

You have to have a reason to quite. My wife has tried many times with

It took me a couple years to break the Nicorette habit. I was still 'addicted' to having something

Another good reason is the smell. Cigarettes and cigarette smokers and
their clothes, house, cars, et cetera, really smell bad. I don't know if
you can ever get the stench of cigarette smoke out of carpeting and
upholstered furniture. When Maryland banned smoking in restaurants, a
lot of them refurbished their interiors because no matter how many times
the carpet and furniture were cleaned, they still smelled like cigarette
smoke.

We hate getting on elevators with smokers. They smell like ashtrays.

Here, this is from my little program that keeps track of such things:

This will certify that John Leo Herring has not smoked cigarettes for eleven years, one month, six

I wouldn't mind one on occasion but I can't. When I quit smoking the
first time, I decided after about 3 years that I could have a puff of a
cigar when hanging out with the neighbors on the deck with a cold beer
on Friday night. It took about three months until I bought a pack of
cigarettes and started smoking in earnest again! SO, this time, I've not
touched any tobacco product!

I haven't read anything that suggests nicotine itself is harmful. It's
like coffee.. anyway, it doesn't matter, she likes her nicotine and she
is a big girl..... soooooo....

As to the Cigarettes, well, either way I have to guess it's finished
business at this point. My wife never, ever, talks about anything until
it's finished. And I mean that literally, she is very private and never
tips her hand in issues like this till it's done... Today she "talked
about it".. Today when I woke up here ashtray was clean save the one
e-cig, she took her remaining pack of tobacco and tossed it deep into
the freezer. Tonight told me she didn't have any cigarettes today at all
and then she posted on FB about the E-Cigs... Knowing my wife the way I
do, this means only one thing.... she probably never intends to pick up
another cigarette again. She told me today on the way home from the
stables, "I haven't had any cigs today and I don't miss them at all".
Yup, finished business...

Now, my point here was not to have anyone preach to us but being my wife
doesn't even want to quit smoking and switched to this... I thought it
might be helpful to any of you who have family members who smoke, to at
least convince them to move to these things instead for the sake of
those around them... At the same time, these seem very effective for
folks who want to quit too...

After a year or so I found that I could smoke socially like Greg. If I
were going out for a big night with the guys I would buy a pack of
Marlborough (my brand), smoke them all night, and hand them to someone
on the way out of the bar... This might happen a couple times a year.
Even now I sometimes take a drag off the wifes cig (won't be able to do
that any more) when we are hanging out, maybe three or four times a year
if that. I make beer I don't drink either;)

So how does an E-cig work exactly?

JustWait

unread,
Jan 31, 2012, 9:10:22 PM1/31/12
to
There are three basic parts. There is the battery and a small sensor
which senses when you draw on the "cigarette". There is a cartridge
which is in most cases is filled with a polyester fill and the "juice",
generally a vegetable based glycol with nicotine and or flavor added.
There is an atomizer with a heating element which heats the wicked
"juice" to appx. 375F. And and a battery with a sensor which turns on
the atomizer when it senses a draw on the "cigarette". There are some
variations like "cartomizer"s, which are a cartridge and atomizer in
one, there are refillable ones too that do not take a cartridge, but
have a tank, etc....

The main function of the tool is to evaporate the nicotine and glycol
mixture into a vapor with no flame. When you take a puff, the sensor
turns on the heating element which evaporates the liquid into the
mouthpiece. This vapor is inhaled and the flavor and nicotine is
delivered in the form and feel of a cigarette. You can get strong,
medium, or light doses juice, or a lot of my kids friends "smoke" the
zero nicotine options just for the flavors and there are hundreds.

So basically, it's really a "vaporizer" rather than a "cigarette"...

Mine was more along the lines of how cigarettes were controlling my

The e-cigs are somewhat confusing as there is no FDA regulation and
there are hundreds of folks out there making them. You have to try a
bunch before you find one that works for you. For my wife it was the
feel. We ended up with BluCigs which are the same size as a regular
cigarette and have a similar feel. She also likes the taste of them
better than some others she tried.

I dunno, Scott. Nicotine is a narcotic and there apparently are "other"
substances in that stuff that are or may be harmful. The only time I've
ever seen these devices is in a local mall at a sales kiosk. I'm no

There is little that I've found to show that nicotine is really harmful, even though it is very
addictive. It's all the other shit in cigarettes that tears up lungs, teeth, larynx, gums, etc.,
etc. If nicotine was so damaging, Nicorettes and all the other cigarette replacement therapies,
which are nicotine based, wouldn't be suggested by so many in the medical profession.

A little nicotine inhaled with water vapor is nowhere near as bad for the body as the inhaled smoke
from a Marlboro.
