I going to buy a marine radio and a handheld GPS within the next few weeks.
I've been comparing prices locally(Houston, Tx) and Boaters World has the
best prices for non-sale items among the places that I've checked. I'm
considering the Garmin eTrex Legend or Vista and the Icom IC-M402 vhf
radio. Is there a good, trustworthy online source that would offer a price
advantage? One benefit to buying locally is the ability to easily return
an item if there is a problem, so the price difference would have to be
substantial to offset this.
Suggestions on my choices and vendors appreciated.
QL

I've had good luck walking into local stores with a Defender Catalog,
and asking them to price match

I just bought an IC-M402 from D&B Marine (www.dbmarine.com) for
$177.13+shipping; best price I found on the internet. Added the command
mike for $92.34. Don't know how their Garmin prices compare, but you
could save on shipping there. They also give an additional discount for
paying by cash instead of credit card. Good outfit to deal with.

To followup:
I just ordered a Garmin eTrex Vista from TVNav and it was by far the
cheapest of any stores or sites that I looked at. The unit was $300
including shipping and with the $50 rebate, final price will be $250. Best
Buy has it on sell for 349.95 plus $30 tax - $50 rebate = $329.95 final
price and most of the other online sources were about the same price.
Thanks Bill!
Quinton

I bought my radio and antenna from VTMarine. Good quick service, you
will pay an extra charge if you get a 8' antenna. www.vtmarine.com

I've also had positive price-matching experiences with Boater's World.

Best prices I've found are usually at Consumer's Marine Electronics.
http://www.cmelectron.com/ Get their price off the web, then go to West
and have them match the price. I imagine most places (other than
Sailtech in Kemah) will do the same. You'll have to do the math to see
if sales tax or shipping is higher.
