I have tried going to Boat U.S. and West Marine to get information and
have encountered salespersons with even less knowledge of what they sell
than mine. I am trying to get suggestions on what electronics to equip a
new 25 ft. closed cabin fishing boat I have ordered. I would like to have
fishfinder and sonar along with plotting GPS and radar for use in coastal
waters off Southern California during very foggy weather, I am trying to
accomplish this in a cost efficient manner based on performance
capabilities and not on comission driven sales hype. Any advise would be
appreciated.

I can't speak for BoatsUS, but I -do- know that the sales folks at West
Marine do not work on commission and therfore are not 'driven'. Also
the stores that I'm familiar with (4 or 5) hire personnel that do have a
back ground in boating just like you. They also have on going training
in the dept. they head up or assigned are to.

Your question as to what kind of equipment to buy based on price and
performance, is one we all ask. Basically what you want is quality at a
bargain basement price, and the suggested equipment was more than you
could afford.

Why not pick up their catalogs and read up on what's available and make
up your own mind if you think they are pushing you toward a high priced
product that doesn't work well just so they can make a buck off of you.

Suggestion: Try a Raytheon RL9 Radar with a 600xx chart plotter and a
108 GPS. This will take care of your radar/plotter/GPS needs. Then go
out and pick up a fish finder/ sonnar of your choice.

My favorites from my own use:
Radar: Furuno 1721 radome type scanner
VHF: ICOM M-59
Depth/fishfinder/GPS: Lowrance LMS 350

As far as cost efficient goes:
Radar: Furuno 1621 or Raytheon RL-9
VHF: Uniden LTD-950
Depth/fishfinder/GPS: Apelco A530

Research Lowrance Map 2000 with C chart reader and GPS receiver
and add depth transducer of your choice, frequency and angle.
This unit comes with worlwide data base already in the box and
you add carts for super detail for your own cruising area.
Unit in Canada sells complete with gps, speed and water temp,
thru hull transducer and c cart reader for 1600 Canadian
dollars.

try SKIPPER 1-800-???-???? or info 800-555-1212. They are not always the
cheapest but have a GREAT catalog explaining the different electronics
options.

I have a 24" hard top and fish in the Great Lakes for Salmon. I outfitted
it with a rather simple but cost effective gps called an Eagle Accunav. My
depth finder/fish finder is also an Eagle Ultra plus 3. I found the Eagles
to be very moderately priced and accurate for the money. As far as Radar?
Well I can't use Radar to find fish or I'd have it.
