Some folks were interested in the mileage I got in the Silverado with the Duramax diesel engine.
This past week I drove it to Winston-Salem, NC, and back, a distance of about 650 miles. This time I
wasn't towing anything. The truck got 21.6 mpg for the whole trip. Not bad. I was surprised. Shoot,
that's as good as I was getting in the 4Runner.

Not bad indeed, incredibly good for a heavy duty truck. What is your
max towing weight, and is it a dualie?

No, mine's not a dually. It's max towing capacity is 13,000 lbs. Enough for me!

We're considering one of these now...

Nice!

That's a real "Land Yacht" as some people call their RVs. :-)

If you really want it, I'd do it now before diesel hits $10/gal.

Well, if diesel hits $10 a gallon, we'll just have to save twice as long before going to Alaska. For
the past month or so, I've found diesel for less than regular at some stations. Now it's back up,
but it's still between regular and high test. It's running about 3.88/gal. I'm doing a lot more
motorcycle and bike riding.

Not bad at all.

What ever happened to diesel costing less than regular unleaded? From
what I've read, there is less money spent to refine it so it must be a
political thing.

About 20 cents more tax on a gallon and cost to produce is probably equal.
Years ago, they distilled the crude and diesel was more of a byproduct. Now
with catalytic cracking, they make more gasoline and other products as
required. My 2004 Duramax gets about 19.5 mpg driving 70, but the newer
years have one more gear in the tranny so get a mile or two.

Have a hard time driving 65. Try to stay about a mile slower than the
fastest cars. Towing is 55 in California, but 65 on the 70 mph interstates
seems to be allowed. Most of the semi's do about 62-63. When I tow to
Canada, is nice to get in the higher tow speed states. Going to the
grandkids in SoCal, I leave the cruise control at about 80. 19.5 going
south, 18.5 north. I get about 13.5 towing the boat with the popup slide in
camper and doing about 65. Boat and trailer are about 4300# Both aluminum.

My 90 mercury wagon will get aprox 23 ont he road, unless I'm pulling
my 18 ft boat, then that 302 squats to the tune of about 14 mpg, when
pulling the 23 ftr. I think I might get 10, and that's running at 50

Good information, thanks.

It is obviously biased away from popular folk wisdom however since
there was no category in the pie chart breakdown called "Greedy
Corporate Speculative Excess Profits". I don't see how they could
have missed an obvious item like that in an otherwise well researched

only manages to get 14 at 70. The thing some real walnut trim,
steering wheel, little plates containing the window and door lock

I've had no problems with "ethanolized" fuel in cars, trucks, four
stroke outboards, four stroke lawnmower and lawn tractor, two cycle
chain saw or grass trimmer. The vehicles, outboards and lawn tractor
have user-changeable fuel filters. Usually, I run the chain saw and
trimmer until they run dry.

The model T ford and renowned 409 both got about 15 MPH. So does our
Navigator, and the 94 F-150. The navigator has a four cam 32 valve 330
inch V-8, which seems a bit rich for a truck. Lincoln had to match the
Cadillac Northstar. Where the difference in mileage with the new cars
shows up is around town, the carbs would work well at the steady
cruise they were optimized for.

Ouch.

Unless you regularly need its hauling abilities (people or a trailer),
why even own such a gas hog? I presume the Navigator is similar to the

Different strokes for different folks, of course. But what's the

Probably the best production boat in that size range for the type of

It's pretty funny... notice how he fails to mention exactly what "less

small, nimble British or other marque sports cars, but they are
typically 6-10 second cars. They are great fun to drive, but even a
base Corvette will eat them alive on a track.

But if he can post a pic of his chubby fingers holding a harry nametag
with that little sports car in the background that has a 0-60 time of
4.5 seconds or less, I know we'd all like to see it!

Ahhh. I sold my Jag XK150S. It wasn't *fast* by today's standards, but
it sure was a lovely car and a lot of fun to drive. I was a big fan of
British sports cars for many years, even though most of them were not so
hot in the QC department. Had an MGA, a Triumph TR-4 IRS (a very solid
car), a Lotus Cortina, among others, in addition to the Jag. The MGA
probably was the prettiest car; the Lotus Cortina was the worst, in
terms of reliability. I bought the MGA well-used, and I got the troubles
with it I expected. And then some.

My current "less powerful than your 'vette sports car" is not British.
But it does get 33+ mpg at reasonable highway speeds, 28-29 mpg at
"higher" highway speeds, and will do 0-60 in under 5 seconds. Your
'vette might be a half to a quarter second quicker to 60, but, of
course, that depends somewhat on the skill of the driver. Same is true
on the track, of course. If whoever is driving that 'vette isn't good,
it's going to wallow and slipslide away.

It's not British or Japanese. :>) And, like your 'vette, is not suitable
for pulling a heavy boat trailer.

And it's a little slower and and gets about the same mileage as the
'vette. But didn't he write "my less powerful little sports car gets
to 60 as quickly as yours, and gets better mileage"? Now the best he
can do is google up a car he doesn't have that isn't as fast, and gets
about the same mileage. ~snerk~ You'd think he'd point us to the
website with the specs of the car he supposedly *does* have with those
performance parameters. Oops, the website and car would have to

You commented about "British" sports cars and how most of them were
lacking in performance. I pointed you to one of many that is not lacking.

I see no reason to mention the brand names here of current cars,
motorbikes, boats, et cetera. BTW, I'm pretty sure my motorbike will
out-accelerate your 'vette to 60 mph and some ways beyond.

You mentioned owning a "little" sports car that had less power and got
better mileage with the same acceleration as my Corvette. You also
said it wasn't British or Japanese. That pretty much leaves French,
German, or Italian. The closest thing would be a Z4 or a Boxster/
Cayman. All fine cars, except they all fall short in one area or
another compared to your make-believe sports car. They are either
slower, or if they are nearly as fast, get the same or worse mileage.
I owned a Boxster S, remember? Face it, your supposed sports car
doesn't exist in your garage or likely in the real world.

They fall short, eh? Well, you're just not up to speed. At least one of
them accelerates just about as quickly as your 'vette, 0-60 at between
4.5 and 4.9 seconds, and with better mileage.

Hey, I know several people who like 'vettes. I've never been a fan; I've
always found them to be hard-riding, with not that impressive interiors.
But they do give you a big bang for the buck, if you like that sort of

Nope, it's Italian, and it's very fast. Faster than your pushrod V8 hawg
car under many conditions, I am sure, though I'm not a skillful enough
rider to wring its best out of it.

I can't do this, but I've seen tests of the same model I have run the
quarter mile in a hair over 10 seconds, with a terminal velocity of 145
mph. How's that hawg 'vette do in the quarter mile?

Don't talk to Harry about small weenies. He's sensitive.

Not really. My 1964 SS Impala was no where as streamlined as a Vette. My
1964 Vette Coupe got about 18 on the highway. was a 375 hp fuelie. Got
about 8 when racing it in SCCA as a B-Prod car. Was very competitive. My
7700# crewcab Duramax gets about 19 on the freeway and about 16 around town.
Not anymore aerodynamic than my 1999 Expedition. My 1968 POS 383 Charger
got about 16.5 on the freeway as well as about 20,000 miles per brake drum.
I just say there should be a hell of a lot better mileage than they are
getting at Ford. my truck has averaged 14.5 mpg for the 116k miles I have
put on it. That includes towing a boat with and without camper installed.
A drive to Alaska with camper, and going over 8-9000' mountains while towing
and not towing. Pretty dang good.

And that was probably a lie as well. As many times as he's said that
no one needs or should have a high perfomance boat, car, etc., you can
be sure he didn't buy a high performance bike or sports car. And if
he did, em would be along in a minute questioning his manhood, right?

Actually, I did buy a Kawasaki, I kept it for a while, more than a year,
and then I sold it to buy an Italian bike, which was my first
preference, but I didn't want to make that sort of investment until I
determined whether I'd still enjoy motorcycling.

My guess is that my non-British sports car accelerates about as fast as
your 'vette, and that you have 10-15 mph top end on me. Maybe, if your
valve train can actually take it. I know my non-Japanese Italian
motorcycle will out-accelerate your 'vette on the straights and in the
right driver's hands (not mine, to be sure), blow you right off any real
sports car racing track. I know that because a model similar to what I
have has been raced against Ferrari's and Lamborghini's and has come out
on top...with a pro motorcycle racer doing the driving.

You can tell how much I enjoy both boating and riding my high

Inadequacy? You mean because I wanted to "experiment" with an
inexpensive motorcycle before I bought an expensive one? Many years ago,
while in college, I suffered a neck/back injury that was severe enough
to make it impossible for me to ride the motorcycle I had at that time,
a two cylinder Honda. I had to sell the bike. I was fairly certain the
injury over the years healed properly and that I could ride a motorcycle
again. So I spent a small amount of money on a Kawasaki to see if I
would be able to ride reasonable distances, up to a couple of hundred
miles. After messing around with the bike locally, one morning I drove
off to Virginia Beach and back. It was a successful trip, neck and back
wise, as it were, so I seriously began considering getting the bike I
really wanted. Simple enough.

Or do you think I am feeling "inadequate" because I'm not ashamed to
admit I am *not* a skilled professional motorcycle racer? Well, I'm not.
Driving a motorcycle around a sports car track at 160+ mph is not
something I would do. But...a bit of stoplight drag racing against
snotnoses like you in 'vettes? Absolutely. Actually, I haven't had the
pleasure with a 'vette, but I have had some fun with boy racers in V8
Mustangs, Chryslers, and BMWs. When they finally pull up next to me at
the next traffic light and say, "What the hell is that?" I have the
pleasure of saying, "It's just my Duc, a little Italian motorcycle."
And it's not even the "hot" model.

Nothing against your 'vette...nice car, but not my taste. Too big, and I
don't much like the interiors.

Jack.

'Vettes don't make very good prime movers of 5th wheel trailers. But, they are cute little buggers.
If I could fit in one, I'd have a Mazda Miata, or whatever they're called now.
