Hey Tim.. ever dream of having a "Ricken Baker" 12 string? How about
if I told you it was less than $250!!!
Well here you go:
http://www.paylessguitars.com/product_detail.asp?Pid=1105
Hey, buy two, one of em' at that price;)
I'm wondering when John Hall (CEO of RIC Int'l) will come down on them
like a hammer. He might not get the job done seeing their solde direct
from China. I kinow that JC Penney tried to amrket them about 4 years
ago, and Hall's legal team put the ka-bash (or, K-Bong!) to them in
short order.
Rickenbacker is very protective of their trademark[s] and people that
try to infringe upon them.
that's one reason that if you see a "Ricken-faker" on Ebay, the
auctions usually get pulled down pretty quickly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fender is marketing a "Jay Turner" model "Strat" in the US. I looked at
them yesterday at the local music shop I frequent.
Guitar and little Peavey practice amp is $199 dollars. The guitar is made
in China. Paylessguitars.com lists a similar Fender for $170.
My Gibson Les Paul has a MSRP of about $3793 on the Gibson website. $210
on paylessguitars.com.

LOL!
Their is a world of difference between the American made and Mexican and
Chinese made versions.

My Gibson is the real deal and it's an absolutely beautiful instrument. I
am getting better, but I love hearing it played by someone with real talent.
Kinda heavy, but that's a Les Paul thing.
I also just bought another, less expensive, but authentic, American made
Gibson. It's called the "Melody Maker" and has a nice, "old school" sound.
Eisboch
I agree, a real Les Paul is a thing of beauty, as is a real Strat.
Knockoffs are okay sometimes, sometimes not. Believe it or not, I've
recently aquired a Chinese made Strat that sounds quite good. Not as
good as my old made in the U.S.A. Strat, but not a bad knock around
guitar.

One of the nicest sounding (and easiest to play) guitar in my growing
collection is an old, Peavey "Strat" clone that Mrs.E. bought many years
ago. It sat around unused for years. I put new strings on it, tuned it up
in open "G" and am having a blast goofing around with it.
Mrs.E. prefers it's sound to the sound of the Eric CLapton "Blackie".

Hey Dick! Send me an email at JWAFM, I got something I would like to

Sent.

Here's a goody, too. I've got an amp. It's a Heathkit of all things!
Built in the early 70's as near as I can get. I bought the thing at a
flea market in Chattanooga, TN, the volume knob needed a wire soldered
back on. It actually has a really nice sound. One of the guys I jam
with loves plugging his old Peavey into it and cranking up the reverb!!
Some of the old Heathkits had some well designed electronics as I recall.
My first real audio amp was a kit from Lafayette Radio. 5 watt tube amp.
I ended up building two, so I could build my first "stereo". One worked.
The other just "hummed". I never figured out what I screwed up.
Long out of business now.
Before that, I "built" systems using old TV chassis. Very often it was a
shocking experience.
Eisboch
My brother used to build a lot of Heathkit stuff when he was in high
school, then went on to become an electrical engineer. We lived in
western NY, got two fuzzy TV channels up in the valley. He got a
shortwave Heathkit radio, put it together and it was like a window to
the world to us! We used to sit in his room late at night and listen
to broadcasts from all over the world. We could also get AM skip and
listen to WWVA in Wheeling, WV. That was SO exotic to us!
Here is a picture of the shortwave radio:
Sometime I'll take a pic of the amp!
For shame.
But, it was funny!

Richard, I think you're talking about "Jay Turser" which is a seperate
company that produces under license from Fender. The Turser quality is
a lot better than it used to be. They make some really good knock-
off's.
Interesting about "name brands" like:
Jay Turser
Carlo Robelli
J.D. Player
FAIK, those are all distributor brands and there are no such designer/
luthier-like people associated with the product names.
Now the cheap J. Reynolds brands. I Do know J. Reynolds. He worked
for Samuel Music/ Midco Int'l, in Effingham IL. for years. Midco Int'l
owns the Lotus Brand, was partners with Washburn for a while, Owns the
Arbor trademark, was the sole distributor of Hohner harmonicas in the
US, also introduced Yamaha band instruments back in the late 60's etc.
For a small office in a small mid-west town, they had warehouses all
across the US.
Reynolds just retired about 5 years ago after about 30+ years of
service, Dean Samuelthe owner, had Midco produce a guitar in his
honor. It's an inexpensive "Strat" copy, but plays pretty well.
cool, eh?
I am sure you are correct. My eyes don't always communicate 100 percent
with my head.
The owner of the shop said they were good guitars for the price .... made in
China.

Go to that link I sent you last week and look at the thread about
"Cheap guitars blow me away lately". A bunch of guys have bought very
cheap guitars, done a new pickup and such, and seem to be very pleased
with the quality of the body's necks and such. Lot's of good info in
that thread, you can buy a licenced or not, made in china or mexico,
drop in a set of pickups, and love it.

Probably needs the pots cleaned and connections checked. It's kind of
hard to tear up an old peavey. i won't say their bullet proof, but
close to it. you might check the plug-in and see if it's properly
grounded to the outlet. does it have a reverse polarity switch?
probably not. It sounds to me like itls in the connections and
ground.
also you could have a torn speaker cone. Interesting that before
Richie Blackmore started playing with Deep Purple, he couldn't afford
a "Good amp" with effects, so he took a razor blade and cut slices in
the speaker so he could get that "fuzz" tone.
Evidently it worked for him.
Ask her to send some pictures of herself.

John *H*
(Not the other one!)
Does the speaker have foam suspension? After some years that foam will
break down. I had some 15 year old speakers repaired and they sounded as
good as new.
How do I clean the "pots" how do I identify them? It does have a
polarity switch and low and high gain inputs too. I am not sure if my
pickups are considered "hot", they are SD Pearly Gates. I cleaned a
bunch of the connections and can get a relatively clean sound in solo,
but as soon as I hit a chord, it really roughs up. Any help would be
apprecialted.

Turn down the gain? I'm sure you also tried the low side imput . It's
possible that your pickup[s] are too high/close to the strings as
well, and getting a harsh or too tight of an electrical field. (just
a thought)
Well, not looking at the amp I can't say much. but...
Plug it in, and flip the polarity switch, and see if the hum is
reduced. If not, then scratch that idea.
your pickups shouldn't have anything to do with what you're
describing, Scott. the pots (volume, tone, effects etc.) should be
accessable and there would or I'll say " should" be like a pin hole
or some say a vent hole on them, and usually a slight squirt of
siliconized electric contact cleaner in them should take care of
cleaning and lubricating them.
Outside of any of that, I'[m pretty well clueles.
you might check the guys at alt.guitar, alt.guitar.amps or even
alt.audio.pro
I'm sure there's those a lot better than I that could help.

Doubtful that a guitar amp speaker would have foam suspension, particularly
one from the 80's. Even new ones are hard to the rim.
But, that doesn't mean the paper hasn't been torn or otherwise deteriorated
from it's mounting.
Eisboch
Could be a bad voice coil.
Sounds reasonable. how do I identify the voice coil on the board, can
I test without a schematic?
Take the grill off the front of the speaker, put your hands on either
side of the speaker and gently press the speaker cone in a couple of
times. You will proably hear a scratching noise and the movement will
feel rough. That means the voice coil is bad. If you don't get the
scratching noise and sandpaper feel, then it's good and probably the
cone is bad.
Cleaned up the parts and connections I could and started playing with
it. Seems to be getting better, I am thinking more about it being
speaker related. But with more and more play, it seems to be getting
somewhat better, could old speakers just be stuck and slowly work
themselves in again?
I suppose anythings possible.....
but have you seen it before? Or anything like it?
Not really. but paper cones can get brittle. I suppose that a bit of
playing can soften up the adhesives a bit, but not really sure. Or
maybe you're getting used to it........
Isn't some distortion on loudly played guitars a good thing?
:-)
Oh yeah...
But sometimes a clean tone (with a tad of reverb) is kind of neat too.
Especially with this:
And for ONLY $1399.00!
Yup, my guitar is awesome clean, that's what I am looking for. I want
to hear those pearly gates sing;)
Again, Absolutely! Thats the main reason I have about 60% hearing
loss in my left ear. Too many years of Marshall stacks and Ampeg or
SWR bass rigs, and the likes of Steppenwolf, Joe Walsh and Foghat (and
gobs of others)
What a glorious way to go deaf!
Yeah, but I'll tell ya, I actually got to touch and play one, and it
IS sweet. Guy that owned it took it away from me after about five
minutes, I think I may have been starting to drool.....
Well, especially if you were playing with the guitar on your lap, I'm
wondering if you were going to drool on it? or get orgasmic?
eeeeeech!
My son owns an electric Parker Fly Classic Guitar
(http://www.elevation-music.com/paflyclelguw.html). He purchased it
because with a flip of a switch it had the sound of an acoustic guitar.
Yes!
How's it play and sound?
It sounds good and he enjoys it. He also owns a Les Paul and a Double
Fat Strat, the Strat and Parker Fly were his favorites. I don't play so
I have no idea how it plays.

How high is the transom on that Parker?
--
John *H*
(Not the other one!)
Parkers have very low transom, everyone knows that!
I'm pretty neutral in my guitars, different sounds for different types
of music and sound. My strat is my number one guitar. I'd like to own
a nice vintage jazzmaster.
I'll bet Loogy is your son. Am I right?
Awe, it's Harry, the childish name calling and petty insult pussy boy.
Still hiding behind your Bozo's bin like a little sissy? Still lying
with every breath you take?
Loogy, Harry does what he must to get people to talk with him. Keep that in
mind.
It is a Parker, so it is low, wet and pounds.
Nah, my son is backpacking his way through SE Asia, India and North
Africa. He is either in Cambodia or India right now. He starts his PhD
program in the fall, going to a first rate school, rated number 1 in his
field of study. Just so you know, it is not the University of Kansas,
which if your field of study is wheat, is probably a nice 3rd tier
school. Did I mention that he has a complete scholarship and
including a very generous stipend?

Around here, the #1 is my sunburst finish Ovation Custom Balladeer - I
prefer the acoustic sound in my old age. I don't play the Strat all
that much anymore and the same goes with the Gretsch Country
Gentleman.
I actually liked the Jaguar - short neck and it had some other little
nagging problems, but over all I liked it. Not a real rock and roll
guitar by any stretch of imagination - more like a solid body jazz
guitar.
And he reads *every* word just like Donnie.
Tell us about your boat DK.
I was testing a Parker bass once
http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/drumandguitar_1994_11984143
I really didn't care for the tonal quality of it. for active it seemed
a bit light. Not much lower end. Besides. I thought it kinda looked
like a tick to me.
S Gretch Country Gentleman, eh? Boy do I have a story about the one
that got away.
*kicking myself almost daily for 30 years*
Read this ...Wordy Boy.
Tell me more about the Strat and the Gretsch.
Eisboch
The Strat is a '64 pre-CBS in Sunburst and has the single coil
pickups. It has a rosewood fretboard and according to the serial
number it might be a '63 - as in made in late '63 and sold/or stamped
in '64. It's just a plain old Strat - never been modified, tweaked,
torqued or otherwise diddled with.
The Gretsch is a '66. It has been retrofitted with a new fretboard so
it's not all original. It also has been played by Chet Atkins and has
his autograph - a real autograph. :>)
I thought you were going away?
Leave. No one here will miss you.
I noticed over on Chuck's board that one of the first posts you made
you made certain to include that your son is in the Marines! Still
using your son to boost your ego.....what a shame.
I still rock (even got on stage awhile back!) so I use my strat alot.
It's my number one guitar (candy apple red, to boot!). For acoustic
I've not got anything too far out, but I've got a decent Takamine:

DONATION!!!!
From Mrs. Rebecca David.
Greetings to you and your family,In my search for a reliable person
and having gotten your contact I have decided to seek your help in
carrying out my last wishes. My name is Mrs. Rebecca David. I'm a 65
years old woman and from Solomon Islands presently in cote d'voire. I
was a merchant and owned two businesses in United State, London. I was
also married with two children.
My husband and two children died in a car accident six years ago.
Before this happened, my business and concern for making money was all
I live for. I never really cared about other values in life. But since
the loss of my family, I have found a new desire to assist helpless
families. I have been helping orphans in orphanage/motherless homes. I
have also donated some money for humanitarian needs in Sudan, South
Africa, Cameroon, Brazil, Spain, Austria, Germany and some Asian
countries. Only recently I saw on television the colossal loss of
properties and livelihood people in Canberra, Afghanistan,Iraq
I was moving with great pity and compassion that I decided to make
this contribution( TO DONATE on assisting people over there, I kept (US
$2.5M)(TOW MILLION FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS) in a long-term deposit
account in a Barclays Financial security company here . Presently,
I'm in a hospital where I have been undergoing treatment for oesophagi
cancer. I have since lost my ability to talk and my doctors have told
me that I have only few months to live. It is my last wish to see this
money distributed to victims of the fire outbreak in Canberra,
Afghanistan,Iraq AND OTHER PART OF THE WORLD and other charity
organization.
Please, I beg you in the name of God to help me collect the deposit
and distributes it accordingly. Use your judgment to distribute the
money,If you are willing to help, please reply as soon as possible.

Wow, "TOW MILLION FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS"!!!!!
It's a 36' Zimmerman-like lobster boat with a YANMAR 6CX-GTE2 (500-HP).
If that doesn't work for you, check the boats of rec.boats site. It's

I'm currently shopping for a 18' bass boat - not to replace the CC.

Hey, I heard that your lobster boat has stealth technology that is so
advanced that not only is it invisible to radar, it's invisible to the
human eye.......
*My* lobster boat?
I have FOUR!
And I'll bet they are magnificent, too! Probably outfitted with the
latest and best gadgets.........
Just remember, if anybody asks you for any evidence that you own them,
just instantly start name calling and insulting, then put them in
Bozo's bin. That gets the heat off of you.
