BTW, when I was deputy police chief in Albuquerque, NM in 1978, we tried an
experiment with VW beetles for patrol cars. Cost analysis looked good,
especially in light of the fuel shortages during the time of Jimmy Carter.
The test car looked cute with the "bubble gum machine" red light on top. All
was going according to plan with the test car until the driver engaged the
rotating red light on top of the car. The car spun around rather than the
red light.

In Germany, the 'highway patrol' very often used Porsche's on the
Autobahn. That was back in the late 80's. It seems like they were
going more to Audi's when I left in the early 90's. The motorcycle
guys were all on boxer Beemers.
Never saw any VW cop cars though.
One time I was riding my bike through Stuttgart. A 'Polizei' VW van
loaded with cops pulled up behind me at a red light. The lights on the
van came on, I got off the bike, and all six cops came out and
surrounded me and the Moto Guzzi. One spoke English, and he asked for
my license, registration, insurance, etc., which I showed him.
These guys were all looking at the bike, but saying nothing to me. I
asked the guy what was the problem, and he then told me my rear tire
was worn excessively and unsafe.
It actually was worn too much, but I'd just been to the dealer and
ordered a new tire. I had a copy of the paid order in my pocket. The
cops all smiled and got back in their van.
Scared the shit out of me though!
