Does anyone know the differences b/w the Lowrance X71 vs Eagle 160
fish finders?
What does the Lowrance offer for the additional $60 in cost??? (or are
you basically just paying for the name?)

Mark,

If you notice, the Lowrance X71 and the Eagle 160 not only have similar
specs, they have IDENTICAL specs. That's because the Lowrance 160 IS
the Eagle 160. In my opinion, you're right, you're paying $60 for the
Lowrance name. They're the same unit with different labels and colors.
The cases are the same dimensions with the buttons in the same exact
locations. Even the copyrighted features (Fishtrack, Skimmer, ASP,
Grayline) are identical.
We sell the Eagle 160 for $236 and the Lowance X-71 for $286.

Are all the functions the same? Sometimes the computer software inside
has been changed.

John - thanks for the info, another difference I recently noticed is
that the Lowrance can isolate the sonar view to a specified range,
e.g., 20 ft to 60 ft, while the Eagle must go from the surface to a
specific range, e.g., 0 to 60 ft... also, I think the Lowrance comes
w/ a hard plastic cover...but I can't see these Lowrance features
being worth the extra $.... do you know of any other differences? I
couldn't find either of the units listed on your website... I did a
search for Eagle and Lowrance came up w/ no results...

Mark,
We sell every brand and every model of Marine electronics. The brands
listed are ones our people know and have personally used on their boats.
We constantly add new brands and models as we personally confirm with
local boaters that they are quality items. I'd rather not advertise
items I wouldn't personally want on my own boat. But if people insist,
I'll still sell them those items. Opinions are subjective, and just
because we don't like it doesn't mean you may not like it.
If we can't save you money, I'd rather send you to where you can find
that item for less money. Recently someone here (Jack Rye) pointed out
that he could get Humminbird cheaper elsewhere. Jack, feel free to
correct me here if I'm wrong. We checked, unsuccessfully, with our
distributor for better pricing. We wound up dropping the entire
Humminbird line. In a subsequent post, in the same thread, we encouraged
those looking for Humminbird products to go to KMart where they are
cheaper, probably due to their volume buying power.
We're constantly checking the competition's prices. If you find a low
price on any item, send me the URL. If I can beat it, I'll gladly pass
the savings along to you. We can easily beat BoatUS, WestMarine,
Sailnet.com, and Boatersworld on their prices. The Humminbird product
was the first item we couldn't beat, so we dropped it. The items are
shipped directly to you from a warehouse to save time.

So your claim (below) that they are exactly the same unit is exactly
bullshit, eh? They look sort of similar from the outside is all you
know.

To get information from someone who knows their butt from a hole in the
ground.

My experience with Lowrance and Eagle is as another poster detailed.
The software in the unit is different, enabling different features. For
example, my X75 allows zoom with selected top and bottom depths. My
similar eagle only does zoom that tracks the bottom. Things that are
easy to change for the manufacturer yet have value for the consumer.
The individual interested in purchasing one or the other needs to
understand the differences and what their value is to him.

I was chastising the guy pushing his business in the newsgroup who
claimed they were exactly identical, apparently because the specs for
power and resolution were the same, and they had the same number of
buttons.

del,
Thank you for the clarification. It would have been alot more
constructive if this was the post you made before instead of the flame.
The newsgroup learned alot more from this post than the post attacking
my opinion. Again, thank you for enlightening me and everyone else here.
