I'm rather ignorant to the current standards for interfacing the various
forms of marine hardware (depth sounders, autopilots, navigation aids,
etc), but I'm trying to learn more about it. I am hopeful that this is
the perfect audience to make this request to: computer-literate boating
enthusiasts.

I thought I'd start by getting info on the interfaces themselves, and here
is a quick list of the ones I've seen listed are: NMEA 0180, NMEA 0182,
NMEA 0183, Koden 757, Koden 717, Voyager Special Format, Furuno CIF,
Taiyo, II Morrow, and Trimble. Apparently the NMEA ones are the most
popular/standard (some of the "sentences" that are supported by some of
the NMEA formats are GLL, RMA, APA, GLP, GGA, RML, XTE, GDP, GOP, etc).
So, can anyone point me to where to obtain information on any of these
interface specifications? Or, more generally, are there any books that
deal with interfacing with this set of marine hardware?

If there is an interest, I'll follow-up with a summary of this query.
Thanks in advance.

(In case you're curious, I'm interested in this because I'm trying to
hookup a laptop to some of these devices on a friend's sailboat, as he
wants to be able to control his auto-pilot via the laptop...)
