Has anyone else observed this:
The Navico Corus instruments can compute VMG when a log sensor and the
masthead unit (wind direction and speed) are available.
Now, the wind direction sensor needed a corrective offset on my boat,
although mounted very straight. The manual says that this is normal,

Indeed, because it's cheap and easy to implement.
Anything else will be more expensive and more of a hassle to connect.

Could you please explain where NMEA 0183 fails in this respect?
It is extensible, NMEA 0183 allows for "Proprietary sentences" which can be
arbitrarily defined and it really is an open standard.

Something I'd like to point out: The market goes beyond boating. There
are others including aviation, automotive, sporting, surveying, research,
and I'm sure many others. NMEA is present in most if not in all of these
areas.

I've got a L20 and after a few months installed, it had a CPU storm.
Volts now works OK but any of the amps functions are a shambles.
Tried resetting, have yet to ground sense circuitry which will be next
step. Shame really as the ammeter was really useful in bowling out
what was using the amps.
