Navigation question (Projecting a waypoint w/GPS)
Using a Garmin's Waypoint Projection feature, and projecting a waypoint at 90 degrees, shouldn't my projected waypoint end up on the same latitude as the original? And if not, why not? For example, beginning at 30 degrees N latitude and 89 degrees W longitude, I project a new waypoint at a distance of 10 miles with a... more »

Valuable things to do while preparing for your next passage ...
Make a Secchi Disk, download the app to your smartphone, take readings, and when in a port with connectivity, upload your results. See: [link]

Arrived in Syracusa, Sicily
Left Gozo a few days ago (can't exactly remember the day) and sailed at a cracking pace to Sicily. Heavy conditions to start with but we were sick of waiting for good weather in Gozo and were keen to get moving. Then we ran out of wind. Bummer. So we motored for a couple of hours and arrived in the harbour of Porto Paolo. Very large indeed and room... more »

Photographer Captures Stunning Killer Whale Attack on Dolphin
<[link]> Dolphins are so fast, intelligent and agile that it is hard to believe that they could be hunted and killed by another marine mammal but it turns out that the orcas are pretty smart also, and they hunt in packs.

Can Anyone Identify This Fish?
[link] We made an all night run yesterday from the Dominican Republic to the Turks and Caicos islands, about 255 nautical miles. Shortly after sunrise this morning I caught this fish in deep water just south of the T&C. It appears to be of the tuna family but I'm not sure. I... more »

Cap Cana Marina and Resort...
...in the Dominican Republic: Two Thumbs Up. [link] This place is *really* nice, and like most things in the DR, reasonably priced. Fishing is good also. We haven't caught anything in a while but the guys with the big sportfishing boats are doing OK. We had a few really big strikes a week ago coming west from St Martin... more »

Whole lotta shakin' goin' on, revisited - Part 3...
Whole lotta shakin' goin' on, revisited - Part 3... We left you, still at anchor in Ft. Lauderdale's Lake Sylvia, reluctantly preparing to come north to Vero Beach, to take a ball for the time we would be gone to GA to do family stuff. It was reluctantly in that we'd fully expected to get into the Keys, and maybe even to the Dry Tortugas. If you... more »

Fixing Things in Exotic Places
It has been said that the definition of cruising in a boat is "fixing things in exotic places". Unfortunately there is some truth to that, and it's also true that necessity is the mother of invention, or in my case, motivation. The circulating fan in our aft cabin (where we sleep) air conditioner has been inoperable for a while. It hasn't... more »
