Hi Bob.

I reckon you're a good man to ask...

I'm considering getting a DSLR, and something like a used Canon EOS 30D is
about where my budget is. My photographic interests are mainly outdoors in
ambient light, including low light and night shots, often hand-held. The 30D
attracts me for its magnesium body, proper pentaprism, and ability to use
Canon 35mm lenses as well as the digital versions. I also like the fact that
manual control of aperture and shutter is by two separate dials. From what
I've read, its low light performance is very good.

There's a 20D at work, which I had a look at today, and I have to say that
my intial impression was that it wasn't as easy to hold as I expected it
would be - bigger than expected, and the right-hand grip felt odd. I dare
say I could get used to it, but it wasn't a duck-to-water experience.

I'm also looking at the Nikon D200, which seems to be a very similar spec
(don't know about the low light/noise performance). It's bit more than the
30D used, but would be worth it to me if it felt better in the hand. I'm
also thinking that the placement of the two dials that control aperture and
shutter is better on the Nikon - they're both near the top of the body,
while the Canon uses the lower-down jog dial thingy for one of the settings.

How would you say the two cameras compare, and which would you recommend?
Are there any others of a similar type and quality that I should be looking
at?

Cheers,

From dpreview.com...

"Turn the main dial to select shutter speed, hold the Av/exposure
compensation button and turn the main dial to select aperture."

Also, plastic body, and pentamirror (less light transmission) rather than
pentaprism. And no spot metering, which I didn't mention, but is a
requirement.

It makes the peas taste funny, but it keeps them on the knife.

From Goodgear guide ..

"Overall the 400D is a great continuation of Canon's entry level SLR
line. Its pictures are wonderful and the minor problems it does exhibit
can easily be rectified by purchasing another lens or getting the dual
lens kit. As far as value for money goes, this is one of the best
options in the digital camera space."

You gets what you pay for hey? (:-))

No individual controls for aperture and shutter speed, plastic body,
pentamirror (and no spot metering). What's the point of advocating a camera
that doesn't have features that I want?

Buy a Nikon D300. This is one professional camera. Metal body and capable of
shooting six frames per second. It has water resistant seals. If you want to
shoot action like a pro this is the camera for you. Nothing else in it's
price range comes close. ($1,800 body only) You can buy as many
interchangeable lenses for this DSLR as you might need.

Oh, Bobsprit talks a good game but he's fairly ignorant about 1) cars, 2)
home entertainment systems, 3) telescopes, 4) cameras, 5) women, 6)
sailboats.

It's pretty sad when a rapist is allowed to go free!

RAPISTS KNOW BEST!

I figured out what happened to this poor boy. 50% or more of 5% of inmates are raped by the jailers.

Gregory Hall = Cecil Warren = CONVICTED RAPIST!
