I changed to West Marine insurance last year. I just recieved my
insurance premium renewal notice and found that the premium jumped from
$528 last year to $661 this time with no explanation. I called them and
was told that this was an across-the-board increase set by the
underwriters (St. Paul). That's a helluva jump - have others had the
same rate hike? Maybe time to move again...

Our rate for our small boat, insured with BOAT/US, dropped due to our
fortunate "safe boater with no claims" status.

I just switched to Vessel Assist after getting web based quotes from anyone
who would send one my way. 14 year old boat, most everyone else wanted a
survey. Not them. Their rate was 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of any other.

Recently bought a boat myself and shopped for insurance, found Boat US to be
most competitive and very service-oriented as well.

The best way to go is if you have State Farm on the house and cars is to put
the boat with them. Your homeowners liability is carried over to the boat so
your only paying for the other stuff. Cheaper than Boat US

I have had State Farm for years on home, auto, etc and am quite happy
with them. For the boat, though, Boat US was much cheaper, 30-40% as
I remember. Absolutely painless binding the coverage. Hopefully, I
won't learn any painful lessons should I ever have a claim, but I am
happy with Boat US.

BUT ask if the policy covers damage caused by, for instance, an old poorly
maintained coolant hose breaking. Asked that of my home and auto agent, herself
a sailor, got an answer a couple hours later of "no", and was insured by
BOAT/U.S. that evening. Also, is the boat's value "agreed upon" or depreciated?

Yacht policies will have nice incidentals like EPA cleanup costs and the like.

I can recommend Christina Butler at Hinckley Insurance, very professional
and pleasant to deal with. Their coverage plans are comprehensive and
interesting, I.e. They will paint both sides of boat to match even if only
one gets damaged.

Boat will be trucked at insurers cost to Factory for refurb if damage >
$30,000 etc.

Nice to deal with an agency that ONLY insures boats, and understands the
word Spinnaker.

Their phone is (207) 244-7251 and there is a web site.

I'm in the process of buying a boat. BOAT/US insurance was the highest,
almost twice the price of the lowest. Their excuse? I might accidently
drift into Florida waters (it'll be in GA) and its age, (1984). Sorry
I'm not paying almost $1800 for insurance that I can get for $1000
elsewhere.

Jim.

$1800 ! For what kind of boat? Our 1984 Express 30 (valued at $30k) is
insured at a cost of $350/ year on the Chesapeake. Coverage is good, and
collecting on a settlement no problem.

I second the question. It doesn't sound like you're comparing marine policy vs
marine policy. While BOAT/U.S. seems to be undercut by a little these days,
that's too significant a difference.

Insurance is very competitive. If you compare the policies, I think you'll find
some significant differences.

I don't think Florida or the boat's age are the significant items. We're quite
a bit older and they gave us a month's rider for the ICW and 50 or 100 miles
offshore for $25, basically pocket change in the insurance trade ... it
probably didn't cover the administrative costs.

Are you by chance in the Great Lakes, John? If so, check out Wolverine
Insurance located in Michigan. They only insure GL boats so as to avoid
payments on hurricane-damaged boats. My premiums are a fraction of those
paid by coastal boaters for the same boat.

300k personal liability, 300k uninsured boater, 500k environmental liability
as I recall. Don't have the policy handy.

So its just liability not for damage to the boat itself?

No, it covers the boat up to the $30k value that we set. It also includes
$1k for personal effects (anything that I might carry on board).
