800 numbers hopefully!
Jim in Chuluota, FL
Defender Industries, Connecticut, 800-701-3400. Largest selection and on
average best prices but worst customer service.
Jamestown Distributors, Rhode Island and South Carolina, 800-423-0030. Best for
fittings, nuts and bolts, fasteners, etc.
Also: http://www.layline.com. Great online catalog.
Defender bad customer service? When they won't even respond to the free
catalog request from their own online service, I suspect that bad
service is a compliment. I saw them at the Miami boat show, reminded me
of 42nd Street Photo in their heyday. 42nd Street is out of business.

Defender Industries is one of our favorite suppliers. They do have an
800 order line, but to get a catalog, you can call 860-701-3400. Web
site address is www.DefenderUS.com
Hamilton is also good -- no Web site I believe, but an 800 # that I
don't have at hand. They are in Portland, ME and in Searsport, ME.
Hope it helps,
Louise

I hope not, just for their catalog. Their prices are low, I always have
my Defender catalog when I go shopping at West Marine (price matching).
I guess I will have to buy something from them one of these days :-)

Defender, while overall a bit cheaper than most, is not always cheapest on
specific items. On major purchases in particular, where the sales tax can be a
big factor, I line up the catalogs of all the major suppliers and some minor
ones and then just list the items and their prices in columns. West usually
gets knocked out of the competition because they have a presence in New York
State and have to charge the sales tax even on mail orders into the state. I
would say my expenditures are about even between Defender and Boat US, some to
West and some to others. When buying in the store, usually only West here in
the city (formerly Goldberg/E&B) because they have a no questions asked refund
policy for stuff purchased in the store. Defender's policy at the store in New
Rochelle is restrictive and Post is worst of all -- no refunds, store credit
only, no matter how you pay for it. So if you buy at Post make sure you love it
and will never want to return it. Otherwise, Post can be a good open place to
shop with its huge new store. But that no refund policy has to go before I will
spend any substantial sum there.
