I found a brand new copy of this book at Minney's, a marine chandlery in
Newport Beach. Unfortunately, Minney's doesn't discount books, so I figured,
"Hey, how I'll find it at amazon.com and save a few bucks."
Unfortunately, it is NOT in amazon.com . I know, you're saying, is he mad? A
book published in 1998 not in amazon.com? Hmmm. I'm disturbed, too. I even
found web sites advertising the existance of Cost-Conscious Cruiser who are
linked to amazon.com, so when you click on their "Buy the book" logo, you get
"Not found" from amazon!
Worse yet, I visited Minney's again this weekend, and they didn't have the
book anymore :-(. It looked like a truly excellent book, one that I really
need to read, and I'm baffled and curious.
Now, the one clue I got was that the book is now under the imprint of their
own publishing company, with a neat little L & L logo. While this must give
Lin and Larry great satisfaction, I have to pronounce myself baffled. Even
Steve & Linda Dashew's self-published magnum opus, 'Offshore Cruising
Encyclopedia', is in amazon.com. If you judge by the mention of the Dashews
in the Pardeys' Self Sufficient Sailor, I would have to guess that the
Pardeys are not "hard-charging" enough to succeed in self-publishing.
Indeed, I'm a bit baffled since I thought from the description that the
Pardeys were looking admiringly at the Dashews' enterprise without feeling
any desire to emulate them. After all, starting a company surely is not as
fun as cruising (at least to the Pardeys - I feel the Dashews are a bit
different :-) ).
Yes, I did email amazon.com. After a couple of days, they wrote back and
asked me if I meant one of the Pardeys' other books. They were unable to
find the book anywhere.
So how would you folks suggest I buy the book? And where did it go?
Thoughts?

A cost-unconscious means to learn about the Pardeys' cost-consciousness is to
join the McGraw-Hill Book Club (advertised regularly in CW, Sail, etc.).
Only nominally discounted (but at least available) the book is its current
selection of the month.

Bluewater rarely offers books at discounted prices. Instead, we've built our
reputation on service and reliability.
Hope this helps.
http://shop.barnesandnoble.com indicates the book is to be released 11/98.
