I purchased West Marine Insurance about 2 yrs ago for my 36 sailboat.
Their price was about half of the next lowest competitor. Had to make a
claim after just a few months. They had a surveyor check out the boat
within 1 day. He approved the claim in a few days. I got paid
promptly. At renewal time there was no problem, no questions, no
increase in rate. Needless to say, I think I made the right choice

We got West Marine Insurance, underwritten by St. Paul Insurance, about
2-1/2 years ago. They're price was much better than others and has stayed
reasonable. We haven't had to make a claim yet (keeping my fingers
crossed).

IOW, we're happy with them!

It is a St. paul's policy. The best thing is to get a copy of the policy
and read it to see the exact coverage, features, and exclusions. it
should be a standard all risk "yacht" policy. Just remember, though- not
all marine policies are the same. The wording on exclusions or coverage
points could make a significant effect on how your claim is handled.

For the most part, ins. companies are being squeezed very had by
competition to give extremely low rates. They are also making efforts to
pay claims rapidly, in house, even if it means scanty (or no)
investigation. Both factors are a boon for the insured.

In regards to how your claim will be handled by St. Paul, you really
have to know the claims dept., and who they use as a surveyor in your
area. If they guy is the type who stands about five feet away from your
outdrive, takes a few snaps with a point and shoot, and nods "yup, it's
broken," then the chances may be that he won't be particularly citical
in determining the cause of loss. However, this can work both ways. If
you need a very technical report, have a problem with a manufacturer, or
are involved in a defense case, you may wish that they sent out someone
who is more detail oriented.

Good Luck!

I have 2 boats insured with West Marine (actually St. Paul's Marine and
Fire Insurance). They had the lowest prices and when I had a claim,
paid out quickly with no hassles.
