To reduce confusion I plan to paint the fill caps for my water, fuel, and
waste tanks. Is there a standard color convention? I am settling on the
following:

Fuel (Diesel) - Yellow
Waste - Green
Fresh Water - Light Blue

If I used gasoline, I'd use red.

Anybody know a widely accepted scheme?

My Jeanneau came with color coded deck fills:

Blue for fresh water.
Black for waste.
Red for diesel.

Who knows, maybe the French have their own separate scheme... For sure,
the color codes on their electrical wiring was different than the
convention used here in the US of A.

I just checked in a marine supply catalog and found the following:

Red - gasoline
Red - diesel
Blue - water
Black - waste

Using red for both gasoline and diesel seems dumb, but that is what is
being sold, the word is embossed in the color coded cap.

Some of the stores sell color coded deck fills. I would stay with the
color convention that these companies use just to be consistant. In the
West Marine catalog on page 786 they use the following:

Gas & Diesel (guess they figure your're only going to have one)-Red
Water-Blue
Waste-Black

I have, in various states of exhaustion, confusion, etc., probably
accomplished all permutations and combinations of filling whatever into
where-ever. I'm not sure color-coding is the complete answer. If I could
train myself to drink and bath in diesel and get my Yanmar to run on
water, I'd feel fairly assured about the situation. Perhaps a single
filler cap labeled "Wasel" or "Dieter" and an automatic separator is the
answer. Surely, the Sea of Anarchy YC has published a Tech Tip on this
topic?

I also do not understand red for both diesel and gas. Since most
boats only have one or the other, perhaps it works out OK. In my
case, it is a big problem if the fuel delivery guy puts the wrong fuel
in a piece of heavy equipment in the field.

The deck fills that I purchased had the following color schemes:

Fresh water - blue
Pumpout - black
Fuel - Red

One hopes it was the same as the rest of Europe, quite a large area.

On our boats, and on the ships and tugs I can remember it's yellow-gold
for diesel, blue for water, green for lube oil, I think. Dunno ablut
waste.

While paying my tithe at the Church of West Marine, I saw some color coded
plastic filler caps. They had Blue (water), brown (waste), green
(diesel), and maybe red (gas). The caps had an o-ring too.

I was looking for a flat washer (maybe it's really an old squished o-ring)
for my old brass diesel caps. Was wondering about these colored, plastic,
o-ring replacements. Plastic vs brass doesn't sound very good, but old vs
new does. Any comments, suggestions.

Thanks

Jim, Of course the French have a different system - since they drink so
little water -they use the red for red wine and the white for white wine,
No color is assigned to water and the waste color in still under discussion

I thought yellow was being used for diesel?
