Is this the proper forum to seek opinions on good liveaboards? My
husband and I plan to retire to the sailing lifestyle in about four
years and are beginning research on what to look for. Need a boat that
can be easily handled by two middle-aged people, one of whom is
relatively lazy (me), with room for occasional guests (kids, grandkids)
but not outrageously expensive. Hoping to headquarter in BVI or
elsewhere in the Caribbean eventually, but probably starting out on the
Texas coast. Any input via post or e-mail would be appreciated. If
there's another forum where this would be more
appropriate, please advise. TIA

I am very partial to the Morgan 41 Classic as an inexpensive, well built,
roomy, live-aboard. you can find more info on Morgan 41's on the Morgan
Owners Group:
http://mailer.fsu.edu/~kklein
or
The Morgan 41 page:

I chartered in the BVI this past February. The most common boat I saw
was the Irwin 45, which I understand to be a very good liveaboard. I
think that it was designed for liveaboard / comfortable cruising rather
than performance. I don't know what they sell for, but they are large,
and have several cabins which is good for guests. And they are very
common in the BVI at least, if not elsewhere, which has to say something
good about them. It also would indicate that getting them maintained
would be easier.

Consider looking at multihulls. There is an older 40 foot Catamaran that
has been used for charter near me that has an asking price of $20,000
but of course it needs a new bottom and some other smaller mends.

Take a look at the GOZZARD. They are made in Goderich, Ontario by a family
owned and operated builder. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for and
they are a good value. The layout, fine touches, and quality are all
OUTSTANDING. They can be reached at 519-524-6393 or fax at 524-9180.

I have a CSY 33, and spent two years cruising the Caribbean with her. They are very solid, with stout hardware, roomy, lots of light. We always felt the boat could take a lot more in the way of bad
weather than we could! While cruising, our dream boat became the CSY 44, for the extra room. But the 33 is a lot more affordable.

My husband and I liveaboard a 40' center cockpit Lancer. Love it. It is
very roomy. The bow cabin has a full size walk around bed and the aft
cabin has a full size berth. The head and shower are seperate from the
vanity area. It has roller furling for both jib and main with all lines
leading into the cockpit. We looked a lots of boats and I prefer the
cente cockpit layout for liveaboard. Good luck on your search.

I have lived aboard a CSY 33 for over 2 years - just myself, a cat and dog.
I find the boat to be quite comfortable and very roomy for a 33' boat. An
added plus is that it is a solid boat and takes to open water very well.
It is heavy and notorious for being under-rigged off the production line.
Mine was never in charter and was custom finished about 8 years after CSY
went out of business and does have a more powerful rig. However, most CSY
owners I've heard from seem happy with their boats.

My wife & I have lived aboard HARMONY for the past 10 yrs.
HARMONY is a Prout Snowgoose 35 cruising catamaran and we find it ideal for
the two of us.

The biggest criteria for a cruising sailboat is tankage. Many
production boats offer very little. you can't do much cruising in the
Islands with forty gallons of fuel oil and 60 gallons of water
I would look for a minimum of 200 gallons with 100 of them being fuel
oil, for instance the csy 44 carry 400 gallons of water and 100 of
fuel if I rember the spec

????? tankage is more important than seaworthiness? cabin layout?
equipment? sail plan?

Have we not heard, perhaps, of sails or watermakers?

Geeze, if you're going to motor so much that you need a 100 gal.
fuel tank then you might as well buy a trawler!

Regarding liveaboard boats:

If you want to move a shoreside lifestyle aboard, you'll need a pretty big
boat to do it. And a lot of energy. Something in the 40+ range, with a
generator to power the air conditioning and freezer. You'll need the
length and displacement for all the stuff you'll want to bring.

Another possibility is to take the opportunity to simplify your life.
Shed most of the "stuff" and learn to live without a lot of goods &
gadgets. For that, you don't need such a large boat, or all the machinery
that goes with it. And before you run out to West Marine for a
watermaker, check its energy consumption.

Smaller boats are easier to sail, and can be very seaworthy. Tankage,
however, is important. On most boats, unless you want to install a solar
cell or wind generator, or both, you'll want to run the engine an hour a
day to charge batteries. And you WILL find yourself in situations where
you need to motor for a few days -- either because there's no wind at all,
or because the wind is right in your face, and for a variety of reasons
you don't want to tack to your next destination. And those who scoff at
lots of water tankage may not have had the opportunity to take a week's
worth of cold salt-water showers.<grin>

YES!! Getting rid of the 'stuff' is the hardest thing to do. I live on a
wooden (not as much interior space as a 'plastic' boat) ketch, 35' on deck.
I've learned to get along without microwaves, etc. When I go shopping,
I'm always thinking...Where can I put that when I get back to the boat?
Just wish I had a barge to tow for all the spare parts! <g>

Wait 'til your choice is...Do I risk running out of food & water or fuel?
