Matt Walsh was a Nova Scotia builder who moved to the west coast and
built some awesome boats. Most notably, a boat called "thorobred"
built in 1929. She was 45x9x8.5 and had a rig that stood 82' tall,
including ringtail. She was built out of port orford cedar over oak
frames. She also had a very unusual ballast/weight ratio. some 18,000
lbs of lead in a 24,000 lb boat. By original design, it was to have
21,000 lbs but the casting cracked and they trimmed it off. She was
considered to be a lead mine. She was also very fast, even in very
light airs, would hit hull speed in ~100 feet from anchor, lost almost
no speed going from tack to tack, and left virtually no wake. She won
races up and down the west coast for over 50 years. Apparently died of
a collision while tied to a mooring in harbor.
The closest things I have seen were the kettenburg 45's, same lines,
but carried less ballast. Does anyone still design boats like this?

That is a different Matt Walsh. The one who designed/built thorobred
died several years ago. He does have a living daughter, but no sons
that I am aware of.

ooops. You are correct. That was the right man. I assumed it was a
current skipper. I should have read the link you posted before I responded.

I just came across tis post from 2001. I knew Thorobred and am the owner of Question Mark, another one of Watt Walsh's boats. QM was built after Thorobred in 1939. I wanted to purchase Thorobred but couldn't raise the cash in 1980 or so. If anyone is still reading these posts please respond.

My father purchased Thorobred in the early 70's . Our family raced it out of southshore yatch club in Newport Beach. It was an honor learning to sail abourd her. I heard she sank on her mooring in San Diego.
