Q: Will painting my boat hurt its resale value?

I have a Catalina 27 which is in pretty good shape, but there is a lot
of crazing and nicks in the cockpit. I know that I could do great epoxy
repairs to the cockpit and paint it real nice. There's no paint
anywhere else on the boat (but the bottom). The hitch is that I'm
planning on selling in a year (for a bigger) and I know that if I was
buying a fiberglass boat, I'd wonder what's under that paint. If I was
planning on keeping the boat, I'd fill and paint the cockpit, protecting
it from fresh water damage and making it easier to keep clean. What
would you think as a potential buyer?

Take some photos and remove all doubt.

If you do a good job of painting, the potential buyer will probably
surmise that the work underneath was also done as well.

Painting your fiberglass boat will probably lower its value. It
shouldn't, but it usually does.

If you are planning to sell it you'd be better off doing a "spot" repair
job with a gel coat repair kit.

Good luck.
