New place
Yesterday I went to a new place (for me) to bird. It is the Silver Buff Audobon site. Not too far away and with some really nice ponds and reedy places. Unfortunately I picked the day they had a large group of middle school kids there for an outing and most of the birds had gone elsewhere for the day. That plus the fact that November is... more »

OT: salamanders
Has anyone had any experience with salamanders? I was getting ready to haul off my garbage today and saw one underneath the garbage can when I wheeled it away from the side of the house (first I thought it was a mole because I have a big problem with them). I live at the foot of a mountain and see all... more »

Well I did it again!!!!!!!
I posted photos meant for alt.binaries.birds here by mistake. The problem is twofold. I don't pay attention and I'm using Windows 7 . I'm using Windows Live Mail as my newsgroup reader and for some reason when I open alt.binaries.birds to post my photos, it "jumps" to my last group alphabetically to rec.birds.... more »

Just realized
I've seen juncos, but no titmice yet... The seed block on the front deck is yet untouched, but I am seeing activity again on my pole feeder and the suet block. And I did finally find my other missing suet feeder. And what are the juncos doing flitting around my brush pile? Cheryl

Birds Nests
A question from a small child relayed to me ("Macie trivia question of the day... What holds bird nests together?") led me to this site (since all I could say with any authority was swallow--mud, hummingbirds--spider webs) [link] I've not read it all the way through yet, and I know nothing of the... more »

On Deck
Lotta Woodpeckers compared to normal, what ever that means. Redbellies, Downies and Hairies. Three or four of one kind or another all the time. On the hanging BOSS feeder more often than not. Nobody interested in the suet. I wonder if it has gone bad. More Chickadees than we have ever had in view at once (8 or 10 at a... more »

Eastern Towhee
We don't normally have this species here. Not that it's out of the realm of possibility but it's usually south of me, more around central and southern Ontario. A lady called me last night, from just down the street, saying she's sure she an Eastern Towhee in her yard yesterday afternoon. Of course, they forgot about their camera. :(... more »

Plan to Resurrect the Floreana Mockingbird
And I do mean resurrect. Auntie Beeb has this item about efforts to recreate the now extinct Floreana Mockingbird that once lived on the island of that name in the Galapagos archipelago. DNA gleaned form specimens collected by Darwin would be employed. [link]... more »
