FINALLY!
|
| |
We took a trip to Ottawa last week and I'm wondering how many of you folks heard me hooting and hollering when I finally got to see my first-ever Cardinals in my brother's backyard! What amazing birds to see! Their beaks are such a bright orangish color that they are almost neon. I was able to see a male and a female together plus a single male and also... more »

An unplanned bird day
|
| |
Getting rather bored sitting in the house keeping cool in the 100+ temperature last week, Husband and I decided that since it was a cool (90s) day predicted, we would take a lunch to Black Butte Lake. Along the way we spotted one young Osprey hanging on to the edge of the nest and exercising his wings by flapping (without flying).... more »

Early morning birds
|
| |
As I lay in my bed a'morn, my view is a very tall dead elm, framed by some lovely, leafy trees. The elm serves as a way station and watch point for transients and some regulars who just like to strut their stuff. This morning, as I lay watching a pair of red bellied woodpeckers, a largish (slightly larger than a robin) black bird with a red head... more »

Those darn adorable wrens.....
|
| |
Sometime within the 20 rainy days in June, we had 2 pairs of wrens build nests in our yard. One in the bluebird house, and the other in a large flower pot on our lower deck. The mama keeps bolting when we get to close to the flower pot, and worse than that, our Jack Russell Terrorista found the nest.... more »

Sibley - more than one in the bird ID world
|
| |
Ok - I'm working my way through "Life List" and mostly enjoying it. (ok, I don't always like her, but I do envy her in some respects.) A book has been referenced but Munroe and Sibley; the same Sibley as the bird field guides? A relative? Or sheer coincidence? I left the book in the car and it is too rainy to go get the book and find the reference to get the... more »

Yard Birds - Iowa
|

Less than normal sightings from this casual observor: 2 pair of House Finches have started visiting my BOSS feeders, the first I've seen since last summer/fall. A Yellow-Throated Vireo was heard then seen high in a Maple tree. A Yellow-Billed Cuckoo can be heard in the oak/hickory timber adjoining the... more »

Lots of Dicksissels
|
| |
This week I saw and photographed more than a dozen Dicksissels at Nelson Lake in Kane County, Illinois, along with Bobolinks and Henslow's Sparrows. See: "Friendly Fire and the Prairie Pygmy: Henslow’s Sparrow" <[link]> Ken Schneider Miramar, Florida and North Aurora, Illinois... more »
