Loons and Whimbrel at Tokeland, Washington
|
| |
May 12, 2012 saw a number of shorebirds at Tokeland, Washington. Many of them were too far away for me to do too much with.
However, I was able to get a photograph or two of a loon in full colors right at the fishing pier that is part of the Tokeland marina.

The robin has abandoned her nest ... but
|
| |
This morning when my wife opened the front door to get the newspaper,
she noticed a little phoebe in the nest above the front porch light. Momma
phoebe was sitting on the deck rail, impatiently flicking her tail.
Love those phoebes!

It sounded like a wheel bearing running dry.
Then the barn owl flew overhead.
I suppose it was taking some poor varmint to its palm tree roost to tear it apart to feed its young.... more »

Young Male Downy
|
| |
At first I thought it was the "daddy" male downy woodpecker. He was about the size of an adult downy. But he was hesitant. He was hanging onto the shepherd's hook, looking rather intimidated by the three carolina chickadees that were on the suet cage. He waited until they flew off. Then it... more »

Today's sightings - so far
|
| |
I've mentioned before that we have resident deer living in the woods
behind our house. Our back deck is essentially at ground level and I usually
spread bird seed, cracked corn, etc. on the deck and the built in bench.
Today I was lazy, and just threw some seed on the deck for the birds and
other creatures. Sure enough, a deer checked out the bench, and not finding... more »
