Seems like we had the out west--just another lizard.....didn't make the
cats sick the way the other lizards did (Seems like we we had
three--"horny toads", lizards, and salamanders. The lizards gave up
there tails under attack, but the cats got sick when they ate the tails.

Long time ago, I might not be remembering right,

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they are not a "nuisance" critter.

Someone handed me a salamander when I was a year old and I promptly put
it into my mouth. Apparently, I didn't like the way it wiggled because
it promptly spit it out, none the worse for its ordeal. I think they're
cute.

I was thrilled to find salamanders when doing the various clean up chores

I think there are a few kinds that can live around the foundations of
houses or in wet leaf litter--the blue tailed ones and the ugly
pinkish ones are the ones I have seen in yards,

I've got the pink ones - one seems to like to hang out under the garage door

We have the black ones with yellow spots here at our house. I find them
under things
when I move them. They seem to like dark and damp places. They usually are
hiding under the
rubber feed tub that we keep under the water spicket for the dogs and cats
to drink from.
I also have seen a ring neck snake, which I understand will spray some foul
smelling substance
if you pick them up...like a skunk. They are not not bigger than a long
pencil.
