I saw what I thought to be a stellar jay today in a tree a distance from me.
He had the woody woodpecker hairdo with the trailing feathers. It was
thinner and a little smaller than a stellar jay. But, it was all black.
When I went out later, I heard a bird calling, a trilling kind of sound,
four times in a row. I had seen something similar to this in the desert of
Nevada, and the letters p, h, l, and x, come to mind. I'll check my bird
book, too.

XXtreme SW Utah.

Are you thinking of a phainopepla? Never seen one, but I've never really
spent any time in the appropriate habitat, so it's no surprise.

That's it. Thanks. First one I've seen here in six years. Also, yesterday
AM, found a dead grosbeak in the front yard, something I hadn't seen many of
in six years, either. Mostly those darn cowbirds.

Phainopepla? That bird is all black, has a crest, a red eye, but smaller
than a jay.
