Do wood peckers like wasps

Yesterday, my ailing DD was much amused by a downy woodpecker hanging up
side down, apparently picking away at the smaller wasps nest up there.

If nothing else - it kept her amused.

Sorry about the ailing--and I don't know about the Woodpecker-wasp
thing, but I'll bet the wasp larvae are a Woodpecker delicacy.

I am guessing it was eating larvae, WP's love insect larvae we saw one(a
Hairy) the other day that was working on a gall that was caused by an
insect.

It was fun watching him/her hanging upside down working his/her way around
the beams into the eaves poking into the various nests. We have a post and
beam house and lots of glass in front to watch nature through...
