How to identify this bird?

I'd like to identify a bird, but all I have is his footprint.

I"m incredibly lucky to find a townhouse in my price range, by a
stream, in suburban Baltimore, and I was following a mallard a couple
days ago, when I found these prints in the sand right by the water.

He has 3 toes, thin sticklike things, like two V's that share one
line.

The outside toes are 1 3/4 inches long

And the middle toe is 2 1/4 inches long.

Do you folks know any pages that give pictures, and maybe toe length?

Thanks

Bing on a search for "bird footprints" showed lots of possibilities.

You need to look at some of the authorities like Cornell.

Thanks a lot. Apparently there's a fourth toe, pointing backwards,
But the print was so simple, it wasn't enough to identify. I guess I
should spend more time threre, until I see the bird directly.

I'd start by making a list of all of the birds of an appropriate type
and size (Large-webbed, small-hoppers, medium-walkers, etc) that the
authorities say might occur in your area at this time of year. Use
yellow stickies or a PDA to give quick access to the info in the field.

("Does the species occur here this time of year?" is one of the key
questions I ask.)

Thanks. Good idea.

You miss the "first ever sighted" awards, but I'm not a likely candidate
anyway.

Swell. A bird book I don't own.

%^)

Oh! Look! A "Kindle" version! (I'm still allowed to buy books that
don't take yo shelf-space.)

Looks like an interesting "read"--I'm gonna get it--it has lots of
feather pictures. And some interesting narrative.

Thanks for the pointer.

Thanks. It looks like a good book. I'm going to spend more time by
this stream, and maybe I'll get it later.
