A book has been referenced but Munroe and Sibley; the same Sibley as the
bird field guides? A relative? Or sheer coincidence? I left the book in the
car and it is too rainy to go get the book and find the reference to get the
full names. And I can't find any thing on google.(but I cold and tired)
Besides, I know one of you will know....

Still pouring, but I decided to go get the book anyway. (looks like no
lacrosse tonight). Will let everyone know, if someone hasn't answered the
puzzzler first.

Cheryl, you must be referring to the following:
Sibley, C. G. and B. L. Munroe. 1990. Distribution and Taxonomy of the Birds of
the World. Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut.
Here's one link that brings up their entire list:

Enjoy!

Hmmmm. I'm confused. I see lots of links here, including links to binary
resources on web sites. What's different about the link I posted?
Martin
A link is just text. The linked-to material is not part of the message
(occupies no space in the message).
I don't know if this is what the discussion is about but I noticed a
while ago that a message here had a .gif attached which was empty and
wondered what that was about.
I often see messages with a trailer saying that non-text material had
been deleted, but this is the first time an empty .gif has been left.
[time passes] yeah it was "one_pix.gif" attached to a Martini response
to Cheryl, which response also contained a link to knowledgerush.com.

Thanks, Larry and Nikki. This is a mystery. I made no attachments to my reply
post, but sure enough, there it is on my 9:50am post today.
I suspect sabotage of some sort. The image in this one little file is 1 pixel x
1 pixel in size, i.e., one pixel. It cannot be seen with the human eye, despite
expanding it 20 times. Such one-pixel images sometimes harbor malware or hidden
instructions to "go to" or "report to" a specific Internet address.
I'd suggest that everybody delete my message just to be sure it isn't further
propagated.
Martin
Thanks, Jerry. I didn't attach the GIF file and can't explain where it came
from. I have deleted the posting entirely, just to be sure.
Martin
I'm puzzled too. Unfortunately, once something is out in usenet space,
there's no way to make it go completely away.

That was my assumption, but none of my tests (crude as they are)
detected anything at all. (I forgot to look at the size of it! Can't
believe I did that.)

Outstanding advice.
I just thought of another test I could run--if it reports anything I'll
let you know.
Your post had a file (a very small one) attached to it.
The file name was "one_pix.gif".
I have examined the contents of the GIF file and found nothing to be concerned
about. There are no instructions of any kind, whether for action by this file
or for referral to another Internet site or resource.
Sleep soundly!

I don't know what it is/means, but this is where it
(one_pix.gif) came from per looking over the raw message:
===
Content-Type: image/gif;
name="one_pix.gif"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Location:
http://www.bioone.org/templates/jsp/_style2/_AP/_bioone/images/one_pix.gif

===
Maybe the website www.bioone.org means something to Martin.
Possibly some clipping and pasting brought it along with
some other material you were posting?

Thanks, Leon. The mystery remains. I have no memory of this web site. I
copied a URL to Notepad, which should have severed any connections. Then I
copied the link into the reply I called up to give Cheryl some info.
I'm assuming there was nothing malicious in this one-pixel GIF, partly because
it came from a website that appears to have a constructive purpose.

I saved it, looked it over. Seems to be just a one pixel
image in a gif file as its name claims, white color
(#FFFFFF). Sometimes files like this are used for setting
colors in skins for display purposes.
I wouldn't worry about it anymore, I think we have pretty
well beat it to death ;-)
Amen.
