Pictures, indeed any HTML, is not permitted in newsgroups. Most readers
can't see it anyway. I assume you use webTV? The rules are different here.

Depends on the newsgroup. Many of those with .binaries. in the name expect
many of the messages to include pictures, and at least seldom object to
HTML.
You're right about most of those that don't include .binaries. in the name,
though.

I vote for shooting. I have the same problem at my new home where I have
been for three years. The cat lady two houses down has three bird killing
cats that pluck them out of the air. They stalk them from many spots around
the feeders I have. I have tried a water cannon but that only worked a few
times. They run as soon as they hear me opening the sliding door. I have
thought of catching them in Have-A-Hart traps and returning them hoping they
some how just learn to stay away. I really don't think there is anything
that can be done however. Maybe if you find an animal rights group they may
be able to offer you a solution. Please post back if you have any success as
I am sure others will be interested in learning about any solution.

Just suggest to your neighbor that they better keep their cats inside.
My two cats never leave the house.

That was my plan when I return one in that trap. Maybe with the scent of
skunk perfume. I seriously doubt she will even consider keeping them inside
after allowing them to wander around free picking off every bird and
chipmunk for who knows how far.

I have the same problem with a big, white cat. He "hides" under a small
shrub, but as soon as I open the door----he runs. He goes all over the
neighborhood. I don't think any type of fencing will keep him out. There
is no leash law for cats in this area. I've seen him leap six feet or
more and get a bird, so far three!! Maybe I should just stop putting my
feeders out.
If anyone can solve this problem, I'd love to hear it. I don't know the
cat's owners.

In town, the feral cat problem is rampant - ideal habitat, willing
mis-guided people leaving food out for them, garbage, under-porch hideouts etc.

My last cat probably went to a Bobcat and I'm sure poetic justice could be
found there. But he preferred red squirrels of which there seems to be no end.

This isn't just for you Mike, after all your's are inside and that may be
the best solution for a lot of reasons. But for those who set out bird
feeders that attract and concentrate groups of birds, nature not only abhors
a vacuum, but I believe that it doesn't tolerate areas of high density
either. Cats are acting natural, the un-natural component is the feeder ;-).


OT: 40F at 10 am with a wood fire going and the struggle goes on. Just
figured out last night that in our one car family we're now spending more
per month in gas than car payment. More staying at home, the car stays
parked on weekends & if an item is missed on the daily work trip, no second
trip, it gets moved to tomorrows list. But that just treading water, no
swimming.

I agree with you 100%, Elaine. My 3 cats also all stay indoors ALL the time
and are certainly not unhappy. I used to have cats that went outside (many
years ago) .... they never lived past 3 years old before either getting an
illness or just vanishing .... or being shot by neighbours. THAT is not
natural.

How can anyone kill an animal for seeing a "feast", so to speak right
before their eyes? Not me, I'd have to find a different way somehow!!

I don't have cats, but this one is tied constantly when outdoors. We
have lots of bird feeders and lots of cats roaming around the
neighborhood. If I'm home, I scare them by loud noses, etc until most of
them don't come back, unless its night.
Hee hee, they don't like LOUD BANGS!!

When I lived in town, a solution that always worked for me, for both
cats and dogs, was to entice them to hand or trap, attach a note to
the collar (or make one of rope and attach the note) that said: "Keep
your cat / dog at home or it will disappear". It always seemed to
work.

We have TOO MANY feral cats in our neighborhood. So whenever one
adopts our porch and starts spraying on it( we have an ancient slow
and fat cat who spends a lot of time on the ramp daydreaming about his
youthful chipmunk catching days0 He is fixed and too slow to be a
threat to birds or squirrels, The invaders are though.
Several steps here... I buy a spray bottle of pheromones that the cat
gets confused by and he does not spray and does not hang around. The
vet has it. It takes persistence, about a week to ten days before the
cat moves on.

I put a mild vinegar and water solution in a spray bottle and wait for
the feline to get closer and then hit it with an undesirable mist. NOT
in its eyes though, I think that is cruel. I have added cayenne
pepper to the spray for really persistent cats.

Animal control is an option.
Animal Friends are also an option. If a cat hangs around here, I get
them to help me pay to get it fixed and get rabies shots. Then during
the few days of confinement in our garden shed for healing, the cat
usually goes away. At least it is not making more babies and spreading
diseases.

I always tell our cat when it goes outside... "don't eat your
friends"

when i was younger i used a pellet gun on a stray... he was a real mean cat.... got into other folks territories...  ripped up things.. took stuff,  fought with other cats....  made messes, left his messes... kept making litters and we'd watch them get smeared all over the road....
 
got fed up with it...  started pelleting the cat....   one had his dog chase it....
 
someone used to get their tennis racket still in it's frame (holder)   and swipe the critter with the screw ends up!
 
he got so stressed out by the anti-social behavior in the hood over him he finally miscalculated crossing the street and the nightmare was over...
 
but that's tedious work...   i didn't have it in me to really rip that cat a new one....  i just got after him over the feces... messing up  my bushes with his urine... (man his urine has horrible)  kicking my cat's butt all the time... and getting under my porch and housing himself thinking my pad was his kingdom.
