I read somewhere that this was not going to be a good year for
eruptive birds. Good feed crops up north--maybe later in the winter
some will trickle down.

I think you mean "irruptive." We don't want to see any birds "erupt." Jan
might, but I don't. :-)
Just to be sure, I looked up "irrupt" in the dictionary, and while it does
mean to suddenly increase in population, one of the other definitions is not
very pleasant: to rupture violently.

I'm worried about my Goldfinches. I had a couple a few weeks ago and
put out a sock for them and since have not seen one.

Fingers are dangerous creatures, Mary Ann! They can get us into trouble in
so many ways. :-)
I find that they disappear for a couple weeks in the spring and fall
to change clothes.

Mary Ann, they are at my house. I have placed around the yard 3 socks and
one tube feeder out plus
5 various seed feeders with mixed seed w/BOSS and have to refill the thistle
every 3 or 4 days.
I stopped at the local feed store and and bought a 50 lb bag of Nyger for
$35 as that is the
cheapest price I have found. I keep it in a metal garbage can which has a
secure lid that
keeps the critters out. Hopefully this will last most of the winter. I
also invested in some
BOSS, which was $16 for 50lbs, which I mix with a bag of the generic cheap
millet mix for the
other small birds like the Finches and Sparrows. I store that in 50 gal.
steel drum (also in the garage)
which has a lid upon that I weight down with a cement block to keep out
visitors. This was one
of the barrels that I used to store horse feed in when I had horses. I also
feed suet blocks for the various
woodpeckers that reside in the woods. The corn in our field has yet to be
picked so the furry friends go
up there for their treats. Tomorrow and Sunday will mark a special state
wide gun deer hunt which was scheduled
prior to the regular season which was held a few weeks ago. Light snow is
in the forecast so only those
die-hards that dress for the weather will stay out long as most of the storm
is going south and east of us.
