As I'm sitting here this cold Sunday morning I'm watching a raccoon trying
to get to a suet basket that we have hanging on the side of a big, old tree.
He's got himself up in the fork of a branch about a foot from the suet and
he keeps trying to reach over and get it. He's not quite as talented as the
squirrels or he would have gotten it by now. I'm sure he'll get it
eventually and I'll have to go out and find where he's drug it off to.

Another below zero F day in central Illinois! Brr!

Wow, he just fell out of the tree about 7' onto his head on the frozen
ground. Laid there for a few minutes--I thought that he was dead! Finally
got up and sort of limped off.

I quit putting out suet baskets because raccoons routinely demolished
them. They would even chew through the nylon cable ties I use to keep
the baskets secure.

We also have black bears here, so the damage may not have been all the
raccoons' fault.

I have one cage still up that the raccoons have not solved yet (nor have
the squirrels).

I is a rod that sticks out of a clamp on the deck rail at a 45 degree
angle and is 3 or 4 feet long so they can't reach it.

(If this http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/backyardbirdcompany_2085_27668073 isn't
it it is close. There is a 6' version.)

I dunno of that is bear-proof--that is one critter we don't have (that I
know of).

Hi Larry and JD. I've had a raccoon get the suet baskets on the front trees
in years past but I think that this is the first attempt for this winter.
If it only happens once in awhile I'm not too concerned--when they make a
habit of it I'll try something different. Thank goodness no bears around
here to worry about. ( There's a rumor that panthers are moving back to
this part of central Illinois but I don't put much stock in that!)

Larry, I think that I know the kind of rod you're talking about but the link
you posted isn't it--the picture is of a heated bird bath.
