orioles and oranges
A few days ago I saw a Baltimore oriole in my yard, the first I can remember. To encourage him to hang around I put out an orange slice. He came back for it, and has been a regular since. Today there were two hanging around. How long should I leave a piece of orange out before replacing it? The... more »

On deck
In the tray this morning: Grackles and bluejays, looking like the GOC in their smart uniforms, some staring up into the sky, some doing the Darth Vader thing, giving raucous orders. LBBs and a catbird in and out to grab a bite. On the ground mule deer. And now to the consternation of the skywatchers, the turkeys have arrived.... more »

Bird Feeders
Hi, Live outside of Boston. There seem to be zillions of designs out there, and I imagine more brain power has been put into this problem than in developing nuclear energy, but is there any consensous as to which brand and model represent the "most" squirrel proof hanging bird feeder available ? I've tried several, and they always seem to outwit me.... more »
