23mm tyres are now thought too small for regular road racing.

I did notice a big difference when I stretched my training tubs from
23 to 24.Xmm There may simply have been an advantage in flattening
the seam and sticking with a thinner mastic bed but I borrowed some
racing wheels with 23s on and I still felt my training tubs were
easier and faster.

in the first visits to a local shop, sales tried selling a tire with a rib down the middle coming to a point.

older riders are faster on rounder tires ?

physical fitness negated the narrow in favor of rounder for higher cornering and exit speeds (larger continuous contact patch, faster thru bumps

On a related note (I think), I have really come to enjoy the Panaracer
RiBMo for its peculiar profile. It weighs like a thick tire, rolls
like a thin tire, has a light steering feel in a straight line like a
narrow tire, and hooks up firmly when heeled over like a fat tire.

I attribute these seemingly inconsistent qualities to the thick but
surprisingly supple casing that has a parabolic cross-sectional shape
when inflated. It has a strange pointy shape similar to the bygone
IRC Tandem 700x30 tire, or any of several Michelin utility tires like
the City, Transworld City, and Pilot City. The difference is that
those other tires got their oval or strawberry-like cross sections at
least partially from extra-thick rubber down the centerline, and the
RiBMo seems to do it just with the casing.

I was suspicious of the funny shape when I first got them, but now I'm
convinced. I like 'em.

I switched to 25s a long time ago. The higher volume makes for a
better ride. Currently using Challenge Paris Roubaix
tubs - approx 28mm. I only have about 80 psi in them. Very comfy.

How about confidence in wet cornering, the lower pressure a larger
section facilitates enables a longer contact patch?

As far as I see it (slightly) wider tires enables you to run lower pressures without increasing the chance of pinch flats. I don't feel more confident in wet cornering. Today high quality tires for road bikes come most of the time only in 23 mm. Maybe that will change. At the moment I run 25 mm Michelin Pro2Race on one of my road bikes. Only at the back. The wet grip isn't as good as the wet grip of 23 mm Continental GP4000S.
