Hi,

I was told by my local bike store that the SPD cleats used in spinning classes at the health club are compatible with mountain bike pedals only. If this is true, then I would have to a) change my cleats every time I want to use my road bike (outside or on my wind trainer), or b) ask the health club if I can remove the spinning bike pedals with my own. Option A is a hassle. Option B is easy, but I hear a liability lecture coming on.

Is there an SPD pedal on the market that could accommodate my road riding and spinning class at the same time?

Thanks,

Henry

I have a pair of Shimano SPD pedals on one of my road bikes - M540 and
the cleats fit the spinning bikes. They may be intended for mountain
bikes but they worked for years on a road bike for me.

Shimano makes an SPD-SL series that is marketed for road bikes that
doesn't look like it would take the same cleat. Maybe that's what the
guy means.

Don't worry about it - there are mountain roads.

Spin classes put on by my local YMCA use SPD pedals. You have two options.

1. Buy shoes to use in the spin classes. Put SPD cleats on these shoes. Shoes will be either sandals or mountain bike shoes most likely. There may be some road shoes that also take SPD cleats. Maybe.

2. Put SPD pedals on your road bike. You can use SPD pedals on the road just fine. SPD pedals fit fine on road bikes.

Whoever does the local spin classes is not going to let you change pedals.

Something that if you do to much of, you may need a spin doctor
afterward. Dizzy spells are not uncommon.

Unless you are road racing/time trialing, there is no point in wearing
"road cleats" and shoes. SPD mountain bike cleats and pedals are fine
for road riding - if you feel pressure points on the soles of your feet,
get shoes (e.g. SiDi Dominator) with stiffer soles.
