Despite having a current premier who cycles to work, an American
academic has dubbed Sydney "the most hostile city to cyclists in the
developed world."

Cindy says she feels more unsafe in Sydney than when she rode bike in
London.

It's all about attitude. Hostility abounds. I'm sure Frank "cycled"
there no problem.

Taipan, Tiger and King Brown snakes do that.

Haven't heard from Frank for so long, I'm beginning to wonder if he's
tried riding in Sydney and got made into a bonnet decoration! Hoping
not for his sake.

The traffic in Sydney is so awful, I used to go to work by speedboat.
I'd moor it below the Opera House and walk up Pitt Street to my
office, and cut half an hour off the journey from Vaucluse. It's
called lateral thinking. -- Andre Jute

That's the way. My wifes house in Brisbane is in Norman Pk. She used
to catch the ferry to the city. Much quicker. Brisbane roads around
the CBD are like a bowl of spaghetti they keep adding more spaghetti too.

Rode up Kerferd/Albert Rd the other night, to St Kilda Rd. A cool clear
night, with few cars on the road. Nice.

Are you sure it's not littoral thinking?

I recently spent 6 weeks in Sydney and rode my son's second bike
with no problem. He rides to work every day and not infrequently
gets abused by yahoos in cars yelling at him to ride on the foot
path - which is illegal if you're over 12. Getting yelled at is
not dangerous though.

He says cars are scared of colliding with bikes, so it's not that
dangerous in general. His route is in large part along a motorway,
where there is quite a wide edge strip for him, and he enjoys going
faster than the cars queued up. He gets to work faster than if he
took the car.

Having said that, though, I must say I like Danish cycling better,
what with all the cycle paths almost everywhere. Much easier.

As with most cities, I guess there are some areas better than others,
and for you and I, Sydney is probably tolerable but could do with
improvement.

I was hoping to rattle Frank's chain a little. We haven't heard from
him for so long, I was beginning to wonder if he is ok.
