Ken Kifer who was a long time cycling advocate from Alabama died after
being hit while riding his bike, 6 miles from his home by a drunk
driver. The drunk driver had been reportedly released from jail for a
previous drunken driving offence just four hours earlier.

For those not familiar with Ken's work, you may want to look at his
website, which has excellent information:

We will miss you Ken!

I'm Ken Kifer's daughter-in-law. I came to this group hoping to get
word to the online biking community about his death, but it seems that
the news has already reached it. Nathan and I very much want to keep
his website up, but as we both tend toward Ludditism neither of us
knows how to do this. I noticed one post (I'm sorry, I've forgotten
the name of the poster,) who offered to host it. We would love it if
someone could continue his site and legacy.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been decided. We're not sure whether
to bury him in a plot his father purchased him a few years ago, or to
scatter his ashes in the woods he so dearly loved. Arrangements are
being made through Callyer Butler Funeral Home in Gasden AL.

I'm in shock, and don't know what else to write at this point. Ken was
such a wonderful person...

Please feel free to send this message to whoever cared about Ken and
would like to read it. I know he had many friends on the internet, and
I have no way to know how to contact them.

To the family of Ken Kifer-
I didn't know Ken personally, although we did exchange e-mails once or twice.
His postings on the newsgroups were shining examples of clarity, wit and good
manners. To you I say, may God comfort you among all those who mourn. Please
know that you are not alone in mourning Ken's death.

Yours,
Yitzhak Ben-Moshe

Wow, that's an impressive web site, and I hope someone successfully keeps it
going.

Tanya and the family...

I am so sorry. Every time something like this happens, it's an outrage.
Please accept my sympathies...even though I did not know Ken, as a fellow
bike person, my heart goes out to him.

(I have tried to delete my usual sig from this message...if it doesn't
work and the sig appears here anyway, it wasn't intentional.)

My condolences would be feeble, so I will allow John Donne to speak for me:

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece
of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by
the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's
death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and
therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for
thee.

I, for one, feel the world is lesser, if only for the wit and wisdom we have
lost.

Rick

I have been inspired by Ken Kifer's work. His web site is a thing of
beauty and a labour of love; I believe his life and works as chronicled
on his web site have inspired and motivated many. May God rest his soul.
