I'm thinking about getting a scooter or low powered motorcycle (possibly
something like a Vespa) for commuting from Murrieta to South Orange County.
The distance each way is about 50 miles (about a two hour commute, maybe
less).

I have a few options

1. Ortega Highway
2 Tenaja Road
3. Black Star Canyon Road
4. Basilone Road (a little longer)

Are any of these safe enough for a small scooter? Are there any other
alternatives?

Is there any chance we'll ever see an express bus from Temecula/Murrieta to
Orange County via any of these routes?

Can I get something decent for under $1,000?

The scooter I was looking at only goes about 25 MPH. But I found something
better

You're much better off with even something like a used Ninja
250 or Honda Rebel.

Yes, and why not? It's only 70 miles a day, for Cjhrist's sake.

I've done over 750 miles in a day on a 12 horsepower 125, so please
don't judge everyone by your own wimpy standards.

Is this a troll? Tenaja Road and Black Star Canyon Road probably
aren't even paved, they are fire roads through the national forest.

Second that!!

Not only would you be safer but many scooters prove hard to get parts for
unless you stick to old line (expensive) brands.

@ 25 MPH ? He said 50 each way - at his little scoot that's 2
hours twice a day. Wrotsa wruck ( Chinese scooter term ).

I never heard of them before. I did a search on Google Maps and those were
the possible routes from Murrieta/Temecula to Orange County.

I'd like to know why Google offered them as alternatives if they're unpaved
fire roads.

Try this

Murrieta, CA to Anaheim, CA - walking - to avoid freeway directions

My options are
1. Temescal Canyon Road
2. Santiago Canyon Road

3. Black Star Canyon Road

I think my best option is probably to take Metrolink or move. This is too
much of a hassle.

If you use the USGS link I posted, you can see satellite views of the
fire roads
across the mountains...

"Walking" is the same as "hiking". You could start hiking to work in
Anaheim
on Sunday and arrive there dusty and exhausted, then you could hike
back to Murrieta on Friday night, arriving home exhausted on Saturday
afternoon...

Again, I wonder if this is a troll, or if you don't live in Murrieta,
CA and don't know that the wilderness of the Cleveland national Forest
is between you and Orange County.

The *only* reasonable driving options are Ortega Highway (which is a
*dangerous*
road that has been defined by the Highway Patrol as a "safety
corridor") or the Corona Freeway.

> I think my best option is probably to take Metrolink or move. This is too

Well, if you do move, find out where you can afford to live and then
find out what
kind of ethnic group lives there before you commit yourself to a lease
on an apartment or house.

True. the seating capacity was incidental to the pit-stop, to
her. She called it 'a security issue' that she shouldn't have to set
down to refuel. She also wanted more seating ( didn't ask for 200 )
for her kids and grandkids.

She's also got in some shit for reserving Air Force Gulf
Stream 5's every weekend for her personal use. And recently there was
a well-deserve stink when the House tried to add $ 500,000,000 of
Gulf Streams for mainly COngressional use that the Pentagon didn't
want and didn't need.

She's our very own Eva Peron.

thirded. the most cost-effective vehicle is always a motorcycle.
especially the 250cc japanese cruisers. im not sure if theres a big
price difference in new vs used. ive seen 250cc bikes going (new, out
the door) for around $3k.

i had a ninja 500 that lasted me 25k miles over 14 yrs with only a
couple tires, couple clutch cables, new front/rear brakes, 2 batteries,
3 valve checks/tune ups ( 2 done by me) and the usual 3000 mile oil
changes. and a chain. all are wear items, all are normal use - i got the
manual and learned how to do the work when it needed it... i sold it to
buy a $5500 burgman 400, then sold that a year ago to buy a $7099 2009
TMax. no regrets, and a year later i still dont know what the TMax
engine even looks like :)

so hm... id look at a low mile EX/ninja 500. relatively sporty, cheap
used, and bulletproof if taken care of.

A 125 will do about 60-65mph. a 50cc? maybe 40 tops. big difference when
youre riding on a road that everyones going 55mph on.

because google is a computer mapping program. as with any GPS disclaimer
im sure theres something said about "roads may not be useable or in
service- please use good judgement and common sense"

id drive whatever route first a few times in a car to get an idea of top
speed and technical parts, like curves, hills, and what other traffic
usually travels those roads at that time of day.

ive always wanted to try ortega, but i keep putting it off. im sure it
would be great fun on a TMax.

walking and scootering are quite different. I think ive been on santiago
and temescal before, years ago when i was dating someone in orange.
theyre scooterable, but i wouldnt try it on anything less than a 125cc,
at least the parts i was on.
