"Claudia Häusler strong in another top 5 finish
The Giro Donne reached the mountains today as the stage seven course
travelled from Como to Albese covering 111 km, including two longer
climbs. Claudia Häusler (GER) turned in another strong performance
finishing in 5th place with the first chasing group. However Cervélo
TestTeam did not have all good luck today as Emma Pooley (GBR) had a
puncture early on in the race at the 5 km point and lost a lot of
time. The stage victory was a solo effort from Evelyn Stevens. The
American rider finished about 40 seconds ahead of Marianne Vos (NED)
and Judith Arndt (GER). The current overall leader is Marianne Vos
with Cervélo TestTeam’s Claudia Häusler holding fifth in the GC a 1:29
back.
“We had a good plan for this stage but unfortunately our tactic
disintegrated after the first 5 km when Emma had a flat and lost some
time,” said Egon van Kessel, Cervélo TestTeam, Sports Director.
“However she didn’t lose her motivation and tried to come back into
the field. At the beginning of the first climb she was 1:50 behind and
then moved up to tenth position. But then her energy was not enough
anymore. The lead break away consisted of about 10 riders and included
Claudia. Out of this break away came the winner when Stevens attacked
successfully and took a solo win. Today we lost some time, but the GC
is still within our reach. We are motivated and will work hard to
reach a top position in the GC.”
Tomorrow, the eighth stage from Chiavenna into the well-known Livigno
is on the schedule. It will be a tough race over 93 km.
