LANCE Armstrong's suspected $2 million appearance fee for the Tour
Down Under has been backed up by discrepancies in the state tourism
budget.
Yet despite the taxpayer contribution to Mr Armstrong's personal
wealth, his cancer charity Livestrong has overlooked South Australia
to donate to cancer centres in other states.
Budget papers show the figure for tourism events in 2009-10 was
$15.055 million, which the Government has confirmed does not include
Lance Armstrong's appearance fee.
However, estimated final expenditure for tourism events for the year,
including the fee for the Tour de France champion, was $17.05 million.
In budget estimates questioning, Tourism Minister John Rau hinted the
$1.995 million discrepancy could be attributed to the cost of Mr
Armstrong's appearance.
Opposition tourism spokesman Terry Stephens labelled the fee
"staggering". "At a time where they are cutting through the public
service like an axe, they are obviously embarrassed about Lance
Armstrong's fee," he said.
In Adelaide this year, Mr Armstrong announced he had donated the
Livestrong name to the $27 million Flinders Centre for Innovation in
Cancer, incorporating the Livestrong Cancer Research Centre. But it
has not donated to the centre and the Government could not provide
examples coming to SA from the charity.

I posted it because the $2 mil seemed like a pretty significant sum.
Not because of any budgetary shortfall to the Aussies, that's their
problem. But if Armstrong is getting $2M from a relatively podunk off
season race like the Tour Down Under, I wondered what he got as start
money for ATOC and the Tour itself.

I'd think Lance's appearance at an event like th TdU would be worth a lot
more than the TdF. At the TdU, it's going to make a huge difference in
turnout. At the TdF? Yes, some, but it's not going to make the difference
between the race looking like a sucess or not. I'd also think Lance's
appearance at the Tour of California would be worth a lot more than at the
Tour de France. I mean sure, Levi's the 2nd biggest draw in the cycling
world, but...

Whatever, those days are long past. Who's going to pay Lance big $$$ to show
up at a race now? Actually, I can imagine he would have a fair amount of
value to Triathlon events, but he'd better work that angle very quickly,
while he's still got a chance to be more than an age-group phenom.

Think big. As in TV broadcast rights. How many people watch the Tour
on TV? The TDU? Advertisers are only willing to lay out their dosh to
networks as long as lots of people are watching the show. Armstrong is
someone who transcends cycling in terms of drawing an audience, is
going to pull in a bigger worldwide audience for the Tour, the race he
set as a goal to win, than a training race in Australia. Especially
without the Alps, Contador, etc. TIOOYK.

It was discussed that Armstrong received anywhere from $1 to $3
million start money from the Giro in 2009. When you compare the
magnitude of the Giro to that of the TDU, it makes the $2 Aussie money
seem pretty significant.
Second, when Zomegnan wrote Armstong that check, it was from money his
company was earning. Not directly from the pockets of the taxpayers.

From a strictly business standpoint, worth is determined by what
positive revenue or value it will bring in return. So if I am Brian
Lafferty and open up a stand at a local chess tournament called "Meet
My Best Friend For A Dollar", it's not likely that Laff will see much
profit if he pays Armstrong $2M to sit at the stand with him.
Conversely, Zomegnan felt that he would enhance the value of his
business, the 2009 Giro (widely considered the second most prestigious
stage race in the world), by paying Armstrong somewhere between $1-3M
to participate in the event. Weigh the history and importance of the
event, the population base for in-person viewing, the time zones for
live broadcasting, ease of travel to the event, that it is 21 stage/
three week event length of exposure, etc. A cursory check did not find
any comments about the estimated economic impact of the Giro.
The TDU began in 1999. The population of the state of South Australia
is about 1.5 million (Australia is slightly smaller than the US 48
contiguous states and has only 7 states. Australia's total population
is less than 22 million people). South Australia is 8 1/2 hours ahead
of western Europe, so a live broadcast of a 5 hour stage that starts
at 9 am (remember that it is frequently hot as fuck in Adelaide at
that time of year) would be starting at 12:30 AM in Europe and
finishing at 5:30 in the morning.In New York it would be starting at
6:30 the previous evening and ending at 11:30 pm.
The TDU is only a 6 stage race and likely to be considered a training
race at that, especially with it's place on the calendar.
The TDU claims a $41M economic impact for the communities in the area
of the race. By comparison, ATOC claims a $100M economic impact.
It's not my place or interest to tell LANCE what he is worth, or if he
should take less or hold out for more. All I am saying is that $2M
appearance money for the TDU is a significant amount.
