Horner was doing the pacing for Lance after he got dropped but then
disappeared up the road for some reason. He ended up down 4:05 on the
stage and all I can figure is that Bruyneel sent him up the road in
case someone needed him??

Yeah, there's oodles of information out there, but it's nice to get a
heads up on the better stuff. Horner is usually one of the better
sources.

I have yet to see Chris not tell it like it is, regarding what's going
on in the peloton, and his own situation. And you can tell the guy knows
his job, perfectly. He talks about figuring out what Lance was capable
of and used his SRM to set the pace accordingly. No seat-of-the-pants
stuff.

Remember the old days, when he was criticized everywhere for failing in
his first attempt to race in Europe, coming back here to be a big fish
in a small pond? Has Chris matured or were people here immature? Oh,
right, this *is* RBR. :-)

Whatever, it's an interesting transition and I can't think of anyone
else who has gained so much credibility so late in their career.

Yes, very interesting interview, first time I hear a racer talk about
watts too, possibly because most of the time watts are used against
them to prove they are doped...

Funny guy, where is he from ?

He's matured. When he went to FdJ, he couldn't handle the culture shock.

Dude is a conversationalist and he couldn't understand or speak a lick of
French.

i think it was a matter of not getting results (for whatever reason).
he was on FdJ for a while (2 seasons ?) so I don't think it was simply
a matter of culture.

around that time a lot of french teams were signing american and
aussie riders, but some of those guys just might not have been ready.

As one of the critics I'd like to point out that he had three years
to learn French and/or produce results. Most people would consider
that to be an adequate amount of time for either endeavor.

Dumbass -

It was the culture shock (and that is according to Horner himself). He
said they'd go to the team dinners and everyone would be jabbering in
French, he wouldn't understand a word, so he'd look at his plate and
eat and eat. He'd end up going into the races overweight and he'd get
dropped and once you're out of the moving enclosure, you gotta ride in
the broom wagon. It was a positive feedback loop - the worse his
condition got, the sooner he got dropped in the races and the worse
his form was relative to the guys who were riding the entire distance.

Keep in mind that this is a guy who relies upon training volume to get
in condition. When everything's going right, he likes to get in 100
miles/day, at least that's what he used to do back then.

I'm not making excuses for him. When he said that, he wasn't making excuses
either - he just wasn't able to deal with it at that point in his life.
