Mark Cavendish saved his energy yesterday in order to win today.
Not only won, but one might say HCT-Columbia opened up a new page in
the playbook. Lessons learned from yesterday. Lotta pride on the line
and they delivered (even without George <g>).

Give Petacchi full credit for his two fine wins so far, but (again)
today, perhaps we saw him pay the cost of making that final big effort
yesterday. Some of that was obviously wasted; he was well clear and
kept on burning.

Just sayin', but with a mere 585,000 military and civilian deaths
(estimated, 1.3% of the total population killed outright) in WWII,
maybe the French should have found ways to piss off the Nazis even
worse, just to make sure their cities were all burned to the ground
and they could have had even more casualties.

It's funny, but Hitler & Co. overran lots of territory in WWII, and
the French seem to have wound up being the scapegoats. For instance,
the Netherlands fell quickly and lost approx. half as many killed, by
population. Not to mention (the Netherlands) having many more Jewish
Holocaust victims (dead), not population-adjusted, than France.

IOW, maybe there's something else going on here. Having a superior
culture, a beautiful language, and being proud of those things, maybe?

You are right. Jacking up an occupying army is a bad choice.

1936--Blomberg orders Wehrmacht forces across the Rhine
into land under French governance. Blomberg send orders
to his commanders to withdraw back across the Rhine if
they meet opposition. Two brigades of French regulars
would have sent the Wehrmacht packing. Rather the
French foreign minister flies to England to confer
with his opposite number there.

(not a historian and not posing as such)
Bad hangover from WWI.
Lotta fear and bad decisions by inept leadership.
Panic in the face of Blitzkrieg.
The Maginot Line was simply avoided; where fortifications were
attacked, as in Belgium, they were relatively easy to knock out
anyhow.

Again, England and Russia had a lot of "natural help"; in addition to
Hitler being-- well, "off" a little bit, to the point where one "item"
in a recent TV show suggested that plans to assassinate ol' Uncle
Addie were put on the back burner, at least in Britain, because he was
doing such a fine job of losing the war.

I am very sorry I did not somehow save the "Hitler und das Cowboys"
spoof of Downfall on Youtube.
